    Abstract [en]

    Neural-symbolic AI (NeSy) allows neural net-works to exploit symbolic background knowledge in the form of logic. It has been shown to aid learning in the limited data regime and to facilitate inference on out-of-distribution data. Probabilistic NeSy focuses on integrating neural networks with both logic and probability theory, which additionally allows learning under uncertainty. A major limitation of current probabilistic NeSy systems, such as DeepProbLog, is their restriction to finite probability distributions, i.e., discrete random variables. In contrast, deep probabilistic programming (DPP) excels in modelling and optimising continuous probability distributions. Hence, we introduce DeepSeaProbLog, a neural probabilistic logic programming language that incorporates DPP techniques into NeSy. Doing so results in the support of inference and learning of both discrete and continuous probability distributions under logical constraints. Our main contributions are 1) the semantics of DeepSeaProbLog and its corresponding inference algorithm, 2) a proven asymptotically unbiased learning algorithm, and 3) a series of experiments that illustrate the versatility of our approach.

    Abstract [en]

    Categorical random variables can faithfully represent the discrete and uncertain aspects of data as part of a discrete latent variable model. Learning in such models necessitates taking gradients with respect to the parameters of the categorical probability distributions, which is often intractable due to their combinatorial nature. A popular technique to estimate these otherwise intractable gradients is the Log-Derivative trick. This trick forms the basis of the well-known REINFORCE gradient estimator and its many extensions. While the Log-Derivative trick allows us to differentiate through samples drawn from categorical distributions, it does not take into account the discrete nature of the distribution itself. Our first contribution addresses this shortcoming by introducing the CatLog-Derivative trick– a variation of the Log-Derivative trick tailored towards categorical distributions. Secondly, we use the CatLog-Derivative trick to introduce IndeCateR, a novel and unbiased gradient estimator for the important case of products of independent categorical distributions with provably lower variance than REINFORCE. Thirdly, we empirically show that IndeCateR can be efficiently implemented and that its gradient estimates have significantly lower bias and variance for the same number of samples compared to the state of the art.

    Abstract [en]

    This essay suggests the concept of “deep sustainability” as a philosophical orientation for environmental communication scholars to address not only the empirical but also the ethical and ontological questions associated with sustainability. Drawing on the thoughts of deep ecology and founded in a nondual ontology with origins in perennial wisdom, it argues that in order to create a counterculture to the uncaring neoliberal order, there is a need to substantially increase awareness of the devastating implications of the dualistic discourse inherent to this order. What is required is a new and radically different worldview of “interbeing,” rooted in lived experience of the interconnectedness – oneness – of all life. Extending research in the study of sustainability discourse, this essay contends that it is only when our identity in-group becomes all-inclusive, that is, when duality dissolves, that caring for all beings, be they humans, trees, animals, or other lifeforms, comes effortlessly and with deep – lasting – sustainability as the natural result.

    Abstract [en]

    Calculus is a central part of the curriculum for tertiary educations in mathematics, science, and technology. At its core lies the concept of derivative, which is known to be problematic for many students. As the corresponding multi-variable concepts of partial derivative, gradient, and directional derivative are not mathematically equivalent, it is essential for students to learn their relations and what they represent geometrically. In this paper, 20 students’ written solutions to an exam problem about the growth of a two-variable function are studied. The warrants they present for their claims are characterized in terms of which representations, concepts, connections, and calculations they use. The findings indicate that students who solve the problem by calculation of directional derivatives are less explicit with their warrants than students who rely on properties of the gradient vector. While the first group only uses algebraic representations, the second combines algebraic and graphical representations.

    Abstract [en]

    The editorial introduces the topic of this thematic issue, which is the important role of society’s media monitoring capabilities, i.e., to produce information about what media “do” to society, and more precisely for democratic development both the here and the now and in the longer term. The theoretical and methodological aspects of the thematic issue are presented according to the approach of an EU‐funded project Mediadelcom, which aims to explain interconnections between the news media transformations and the risks and opportunities for deliberative communication. One of the stages of the project investigates media monitoring capabilities in different countries. The eight articles introduced in the editorial contribute to deepening the perspectives on the capabilities of media monitoring in the 21st century, and to understanding their function in detecting potential risks and opportunities for democratic public deliberation.

    Abstract [en]

    Background: Research on the daily experiences of transgender and gender diverse (TGD) youth 18 years or younger is limited, making it essential to gain a comprehensive understanding of their internal and external experiences related to gender identity.

    Aim: This systematic review and qualitative research synthesis fills this research gap by examining the lived experiences and coping of TGD youth, including prepubertal children.

    Methods: The review was pre-registered according to PROSPERO on the Open Science Framework and followed the ENTREQ reporting guidelines. A Qualitative research synthesis, according to Howell Major and Savin-Baden, was conducted.

    Results: Seventeen peer-reviewed articles published between 2000 and 2023 fulfilled inclusion criteria and quality assessment. Synthesized themes were: (1) “Navigating gender identity”, with two sub-themes, Meaning-making and Considering visibility (2) “Navigating relations”, with four sub-themes: Longing for belonging, Supportive actions, Lack of safety and Coping inside out (3) “Navigating society with two sub-themes Inclusion and exclusion and Beyond control. Our findings demonstrate that TGD youth view gender identity as fluid and benefit from a supportive environment that facilitates genuine exploration. Coping strategies develop intricately, influenced by multifaceted factors.

    Discussion: Unlike previous research on the negative effects of minority stress, our review underscores the cumulative impact of subtle daily stressors on TGD youth’s well-being, highlighting the significance of an environment where gender is not a constant concern. By shedding light on these dynamics, this synthesis contributes to a comprehensive understanding of TGD youth’s perspectives for professionals and a broader audience.

    Rapporten syftar till att beskriva fynden i ett forskningsprojekt om familjers vardagsmobilitet i ”socialt utsatta” områden. I studien ingår 71 individer från 31 familjer vars vardagsmobilitet har undersökts kvalitativt.Forskningsdeltagarnas bostadsområden, med närhet till samhällsservice och kollektivtrafik och väl utbyggd gång- och cykelinfrastruktur, ger goda grundläggande förutsättningar för vardagens resande. Många av familjerna har knappa ekonomiska och tidsmässiga vardagsliv med många förpliktelser, ofta bundna i tid och rum. Bussen är det vanligaste färdmedlet, med betungande arbetsresor och omsorgsresor för vuxna, framför allt för mödrar. De höga priserna begränsar möjligheten att åka buss, särskilt för ungdomarna. Gång spelar också en betydande roll. Bilen är central för många familjer eftersom den möjliggör snabba resor i vardagen och är ett sätt att visa och utöva omsorg på. Oftast är det männen som kör. I flera hushåll saknas bil och körkort. Även om några cyklar i vardagen finns det många barriärer, som bristande cykelförmåga och cykelvana. Forskningsdeltagarna präglas av att leva i närheten av kriminalitet och våld som inverkar på hur de rör sig i vardagen. Föräldrar begränsar särskilt unga pojkars mobilitet av omsorg. Föräldrarnas oro för att de ska hamna i kriminalitet gör att de styr var de unga tillåts röra sig och på vilka tider, samt vilket socialt umgänge de har. Kulturella föreställningar (kring t.ex. olika färdsätt och bostadsområdet) är ytterligare ett lager som behöver beaktas när familjers vardagsmobilitet diskuteras. Åtgärder som kan stärka familjers vardagliga mobilitet behöver sättas i relation till de begränsningar som finns i ”socialt utsatta” områden. Transport- och samhällsplaneringen bör avlasta de tyngder som familjer upplever i vardagen, och bidra till upprättande och upprätthållande av välfärdsinfrastrukturer. För att styra mot mobilitetsrättvisa behövs åtgärder som gör det möjligt för välbeställda grupper att resa hållbart, medan grupper som upplever bristande tillgänglighet samtidigt kan stärkas.

    Painful Sex in Context: Understanding Vulvodynia from a Relational Perspective2024Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

    Vulvodynia is a multifactorial persistent pain condition, characterized by pain in the vulva upon touch or pressure. It negatively impacts sexual function, satisfaction, and relational wellbeing. Relational factors have been indicated as integral to the understanding and outcomes of vulvodynia. The overall aim of this dissertation was to further the understanding of women’s pain-related behaviors in relation to the dyadic and normative contexts of vulvodynia.

    Using a person-oriented approach, study I explored links between coping behaviors, i.e., avoidance and endurance on the one hand, and on the other, relational and pain catastrophizing, perceived partner responses, and motivational goals, in a sample of 128 women with vulvodynia. Study II explored the significance of normative context for the experience of vulvodynia by qualitatively investigating subjective experiences of five women living with dyspareunia in a queer relationship. Using behavioral observation and self-report, study III investigated patterns of sexual communication quality in heterosexual vulvodynia couples (n = 25) as compared to couples without pain (n = 37), and assessed potential associations with pain, self-disclosure, and sexual assertiveness.

    The findings from the three studies together highlight the significance of the normative context and relational factors such as the emotional quality of sexual communication and women’s relational cognitions, for women’s pain-related experiences and coping behaviors. A new theoretical model, the Interpersonal Pain Coping Model of Vulvodynia, is proposed as a way of integrating contextual factors such as partner behaviors and sexual scripts into the understanding of women’s behavioral response to vulvodynia.

    Abstract [en]

    This study explores the subjective experiences of dyspareunia among queer women in Sweden. Ten semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with five participants who were all interviewed on two separate occasions. Interviews were analysed using thematic analysis. Dyspareunia was described as affecting the participants' sexual activities, intimate relationships, and identity constructs. Reported struggles involved feelings of sadness, guilt, frustration, and fear of pain. Dyspareunia was described as threatening the participants' queer identities through its effect on their ability to be sexual in idealised ways. However, queer experiences and communities were also found to be associated with advantages in pain management, such as well-developed sexual communication skills, anatomic similarity to their partner, access to non-heteronormative sexual scripts and a focus on nurturing desire. Queer related advantages in pain management are proposed to buffer to some extent against pain interference with sexual function and desire. Findings indicate that it is important to consider the unique relational and social context of queer women to understand their experiences of dyspareunia. More research is needed on the role of differences of normativities, context and communication in dyspareunia.

    BACKGROUND: Sexual communication is a common target in psychological treatments for vulvodynia, and associations with sexual function and distress, as well as pain intensity, have been demonstrated. However, structured observations of the communication patterns of couples with vulvodynia are lacking, as these are needed to guide treatment efforts.

    AIM: To explore (1) the sexual communication patterns in couples with vulvodynia in terms of observed communication quality (operationalized as validating and invalidating responses), self-reported sexual assertiveness, and self-disclosure and (2) associations between sexual communication quality and pain intensity.

    METHODS: In a case-control design with within- and between-group comparisons, 62 couples engaged in videotaped discussions about their sexual relationship. Trained coders assessed the discussions by rating sexual communication (validation and invalidation) according to a structured behavioral coding scheme. Group differences in sexual communication quality were examined with parametric and nonparametric tests. Dyadic associations among observed communication quality, self-rated sexual assertiveness, and self-disclosure were examined within the actor-partner interdependence model. Multiple regression was used to test the predictive value of partners' validation/invalidation on the pain intensity of the women with vulvodynia.

    OUTCOMES: Observed communication quality (ie, validation and invalidation), self-reported sexual assertiveness, self-disclosure, and pain intensity.

    RESULTS: Partners of women with vulvodynia were more invalidating toward their partners than those of women without pain. There were no significant differences in validating/invalidating communication between women in the 2 groups or in validation between partners. Partners' validating communication were significantly associated with women's lower pain intensity. The sexual communication patterns differed between couples with and without vulvodynia, and the associations between validating/invalidating responses and sexual assertiveness were stronger in the vulvodynia group than in the group without pain. Results on validation/invalidation and self-disclosure were inconclusive.

    CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: The results indicate a need to direct treatment interventions toward couples' sexual communication quality (ie, levels of validation and invalidation).

    STRENGTHS AND LIMITATIONS: Strengths include systematic behavioral coding and dyadic analyses. Limitations include the cross-sectional design and self-selection of participants.

    CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated sexual communication patterns specific to couples with vulvodynia, and we conclude that validation and invalidation are important components of the sexual communication of couples with vulvodynia as they relate to sexual assertiveness, women's self-disclosure, and pain intensity.

    Abstract [en]

    The objective of this article is to explore differentiation of education through juridification. We examine changes in school governing, including trends towards globalization and marketization, as well as increased regulatory intervention in addressing complex social problems. Drawing on Luhmann’s theory of functional differentiation and Teubner’s problematization of juridification, we scrutinize three sets of distinct legislative regulations in a Swedish context. We uncover a multifaceted juridification alongside a multifunctional school organization nested in a complex web of differentiated and interconnected subsystems. Traditional forms of differentiation persist, albeit with juridification as a lever, thus sparking renewed tensions.

    I årtionden har begreppen folkhälsa, hälsa och hälsofrämjande använts i relation till idrott på många sätt i såväl praktik, forskning som i policy. Att idrotten har någon slags betydelse för och koppling till folkhälsan torde vara helt klarlagt. Men hur kan vi förstå relationen eller kanske snarare relationerna mellan idrott och folkhälsa? Ett forskningsområde som tar tag i relationen idrott och folkhälsa och som också breddar vad relationen kan bestå av är forskningsfältet idrotten som hälsofrämjande arena (Health promoting sports clubs). I artikeln kommer vi därför att med utgångspunkt i forskning om idrotten som hälsofrämjande arena teoretisera relationen idrott - folkhälsa. Vi kommer därigenom diskutera och illustrera hur vi på fler än ett sätt kan öka förståelsen för idrotten som hälsofrämjande för så många som möjligt så länge som möjligt.

    The paper focuses on option pricing under unusual behaviour of the market, when the price may not be changed for some time what is quite a common situation on the modern financial markets. There are some patterns that can cause permanent price gaps to form and lead to illiquidity. For example, global changes that have a negative impact on financial activity, or a small number of market participants, or the market is quite young and is just in the process of developing, etc.

    In the paper discrete and continuous time approaches for modelling market with illiquidity and evaluation option pricing were considered.Trinomial discrete time model improves upon the binomial model by allowing a stock price not only to move up, down but stay the same with certain probabilities, what is a desirable feature for the illiquid modelling. In the paper parameters for real financial data were identified and the backward induction algorithm for building call option price trinomial tree was applied.Subdiffusive continuous time model allows successfully apply the physical models for describing the trapping events to model financial data stagnation's periods. In this paper the Inverse Gaussian process IG was proposed as a subordinator for the subdiffusive modelling of illiquidity and option pricing. The simulation of the trajectories for subordinator, inverse subordinator and subdiffusive GBM were performed. The Monte Carlo method for option evaluation was applied.

    Our aim was not only to compare these two models each with other, but also to show that both models adequately describe the illiquid market and can be used for option pricing on this market. For this purpose absolute relative percentage (ARPE) and root mean squared error (RMSE) for both models were computed and analysed.

    Thanks to the proposed approaches, the investor gets a tools, which allows him to take into account the illiquidity.

    This issue, the first of volume 4, marks the start of Multimodality & Society’s fourth year and provides a good moment to look across the past 3 years to review and reflect on the journal’s contribution to multimodality. Multimodality & Society aims to consolidate and advance multimodal theory, methodologies, and empirical understanding of interaction and communication. This editorial considers the collective contribution of the 12 issues published to date and points to how the journal can continue to push the boundaries of multimodality forward. We highlight the significance of the journal’s expansion of multimodal formats, and several directions embedded in the journal scope which we have advanced.

    Abstract [en]

    The overall interest of this thesis is to contribute with knowledge about meaning making processes in educational encounters with nature in different educational practices. The exploration consists of four studies based on a pragmatic perspective on meaning making inspired by the works of John Dewey and Ludwig Wittgenstein. A discourse analytical approach is also used in the first study to analyse the curriculum documents. The result confirms that encounters with nature have a clear position in the curriculum documents, and friluftsliv is a prioritised content in PETE. It is further confirmed that the field of outdoor education is a field of conflicting meanings that pose significant educational challenges. Indeterminate situations occur and may influence students’ possibilities to transform the educational content in PETE to a school context. Another conclusion from the results is that instrumental meanings and a sportification of friluftsliv often get precedence over more emotional based meanings connected to nature. The results also show empirical examples where encounters with nature enable participants to create moral relations towards nature. This potential is highlighted in previous research as one of the most important in order to (re)connect our relation towards nature and in extension better conditions to deal with environmental questions.

    Abstract [en]

    The overall aim of this article is to contribute to a critical discussion about aims and goals of outdoor education in schools. The study examines motives for outdoor education in the national curricula in Sweden from the end of 19th century until today. The study relies on a discourse analysis methodology. Aspects of continuity and change connected to the identified motives are also included in the analyses. The results show that a scientific perspective on encounters with nature has dominated during the last hundred years. In recent years, more instrumental motives are expressed in the curricula, while students' personal experiences and feelings are less focused. © 2022 University of Oslo, Norwegian Centre for Science Education.     Abstract [en]

    The overall aim of this article is to develop in-depth knowledge about the connection between outdoor experiences and moral attitudes towards nature. The study focuses on processes in which moral relations are at stake in encounters between students and nature. The purpose is to identify such events, describe their specific circumstances and clarify how moral relations are established in these events. The empirical material consists of video-recordings of activities in three different outdoor education practices. In order to identify and categorise moral situations, an analytical tool called the ethical tendency is used. This tool is based on Wittgenstein’s language game method. The findings show that in the investigated outdoor education practices, moral relations towards nature are established in several different ways. The article concludes with four educational implications: responsibility when dealing with moral reactions; bring- ing ethical questions to the fore; different educational conditions create different encounters with nature; and the consequences of different language games.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim with this article is to contribute knowledge about the meanings of friluftsliv in educational practice. This is done by investigating what friluftsliv becomes in the ongoing practices of PETE in Sweden and how these meanings are established in the studied activities. The empirical material consists of different kinds of material from friluftsliv activities in PETE programmes: study guides, field trip plans, students' vlogs from overnight stays outdoors, video recordings from two longer field trips, audio recordings from evening seminars during the field trips and students' written reflections after them. In order to identify meanings of friluftsliv and how these are established we used a transactional analysis based on Dewey. Five different ways of what friluftsliv becomes in PETE practice were identified in this study. The different meanings reflect the complex picture of contradictions and lack of common ground for the content and motives identified in the outdoor education field. Our study also confirms how the meaning of friluftsliv as skills is established by putting up tents, lighting fires, building wind shelters and so on, and how this contributes to a focus on the instrumental values in PETE. On the other hand, our study shows that other meanings of friluftsliv are established in the ongoing practice, where more intrinsic values are at stake even if they are often overshadowed in PETE practice. In conclusion the results also point to the potential of fritluftsliv in terms of a suggested move away from an activity-based personal and social development discourse in favour of experiences of educating for environmentally sustainable human-nature relations. The challenge is how to make these experiences educational in PETE and how to guide students in transforming experiences in more exclusive friluftsliv into pedagogical competence as future teachers using friluftsliv for different purposes in school PE.

    Volunteering is a global phenomenon and different type of volunteers can be found in different types of organizations. Societal changes in how people volunteer and in how organizations use volunteers have made researchers call for a re-examining of organizing of volunteers. Therefore, this study aims to explore how different types of volunteering are organized in different types of organizations. The study uses an interdisciplinary research (IDR) approach with two perspectives, which in this paper are called Volunteer management (VM) and Volunteer coordination (VC). Four different Swedish organizations with different type of volunteers, two different types of sports organizations, one social organization and an entrepreneurial network are used as cases. The data consists of 18 interviews with project managers and volunteers. The data is analyzed in three IDR-inspired steps using both qualitative and quantitative analyses. This study reveals that understanding how to organize volunteering benefits from viewing volunteer organization in a proposed two-dimensional model. This model includes management strategies in different phases as well as relational perspectives and strikes a balance between organizational structure and climate. Merging research traditions can contribute to new knowledge in a changing society. Voluntary organizations need to work with everyday structures that allow them the flexibility to develop a sustainable volunteer organization by both managing and coordinating their volunteers.

    Abstract [en]

    For the global monitoring plan (GMP) established under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), passive air samplers (PAS) equipped with polyurethane foam disks (PUFs) were recommended for generating comparative results on the presence of POPs in countries. One representative sampling location was designed in each of the 42 countries and the PAS/PUFs exposed for three months to collect POPs during 2017–2019. The PUFs were analyzed in three laboratories according to their chemical nature and concentrations reported per PUF and 90 ± 3 days of exposure. In total, 381 PUFs were analyzed for organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), industrial chlorinated POPs, dioxin-like POPs (dl-POPs), brominated flame retardants (BFRs), and perfluoroalkane substances (PFAS). Concentrations typically varied by a factor of up to three for a POP and often within the same geographic region or other denominator such as similar latitudes or altitudes. Maximum values were found for DDT (895 ng/PUF) in Africa, but the highest medium value was in the Latin American countries. Also, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) were most abundant across all parameters assessed. Noteworthy were high values in single countries, such as DDT in the Solomon Islands, toxaphene in Mexico, β-HCH and lindane in Tanzania, hexachlorobutadiene and hexabromocyclododecone in Mongolia, deca-BDE and PFOS in Zambia. Although we had two sampling locations at very high altitudes, >2000 m, we could determine increasing POPs concentrations with increasing altitudes only for HCB but not for other POPs. A general dependency on latitudes with higher concentrations towards the north and south pole could not be found, although the most northern station in Mongolia had two of the maxima and elevated values for some legacy POPs.

    This chapter reviews empirical and theoretical work within critical studies on men and masculinities (CSMM), drawing on extensive empirical and theoretical studies relevant to psychology and social psychology. The chapter focuses on gender relations and power dynamics, social structures, intersectionality, bodies, practices, and identities, both individual and collective. The chapter first maps the key theoretical developments of CSMM, historically and conceptually, before moving to focus on two important contemporary issues: first, the development of more egalitarian masculinities, and, second, the explanations for various non-egalitarian masculinities, such those linked to incel and Alt-Right movements, both online and offline.

    Measurement properties of the Swedish self-administered version of the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.02023Licentiatavhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

    The World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 (WHODAS 2.0) is a leading patient-reported outcome measure of disability. However, patients' perspective of the WHODAS 2.0 self-administered Swedish version have not been sufficiently described. Similarly, knowledge of its construct validity in the general population is missing. This creates a gap because updated norm data to use as reference is also missing. The overall aim of this study was to establish evidence of the measurement properties of the self-administered Swedish version of the WHODAS 2.0.

    Both qualitative and quantitative methods were adopted. In Study I, interviews with patients (n = 12) with orthopaedic or psychiatric conditions were performed and data were analysed by deductive content analysis. In Study II, a cross-sectional general population survey (n = 3 482) was conducted, and statistical methods based on classical test theory were used in the data analysis.

    The results show that the items were well understood, acceptable and easy to answer by outpatients, with the exception of six items (Study I).The internal consistency reliability was good or excellent and the construct validity was overall acceptable, with partial support for the factor structure in the general populations (Study II).

    The self-administered Swedish 36-item version of the WHODAS 2.0 is comparable to other language versions of the instrument. Some of the previous known weaknesses of its construct validity in relation to the item content and insufficient instructions were confirmed. The evidence of overall good content and construct validity together with available norm data supports its use in clinical settings and research.

    BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS 2.0) is a generic questionnaire that captures health and disability-related functioning information corresponding to six major life domains: Cognition, Mobility, Self-care, Getting along, Life activities, and Participation. The WHODAS 2.0 is used in a wide range of international clinical and research settings. A psychometric evaluation of WHODAS 2.0, Swedish version, in the general population is lacking, together with national reference data to enable interpretation and comparison. This study aims to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Swedish 36-item version of WHODAS 2.0 and describe the prevalence of disability in a Swedish general population.

    METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was performed. Internal consistency reliability was assessed with Cronbach's alpha. The construct validity was evaluated with item-total correlation, Pearson's correlation between the WHODAS 2.0 domains and the RAND-36 subscales, analysis of known groups by one-way ANOVA, and analysis of the factor structure by confirmatory factor analysis.

    RESULTS: Three thousand four hundred and eighty two adults aged 19-103 years (response rate 43%) participated. Significantly higher degrees of disability were reported by the oldest age group (≥ 80 years), adults with a low level of education, and those on sick leave. Cronbach's alpha was from 0.84 to 0.95 for the domain scores and 0.97 for the total score. The item-scale convergent validity was satisfactory, and the item-scale discriminant validity was acceptable except for the item about sexual activity. The data partially supported the factor structure, with borderline fit indices.

    CONCLUSION: The psychometric properties of the self-administered Swedish 36-item version of the WHODAS 2.0 are comparable to those of other language versions of the instrument. Data of the prevalence of disability in Swedish general population enables normative comparisons of WHODAS 2.0 scores of individuals and groups within clinical practice. The instrument has certain limitations that could be improved on in a future revision. The test-retest reliability and responsiveness of the Swedish version of WHODAS 2.0 for different somatic patient populations remain to be evaluated.

    This abstract explores the intersection of gender, youth, and illness in Sweden from 1870 to 1930, focusing on the medical discourse surrounding the health of girls. The study, conducted by Anna-Karin Frih from Örebro University, investigates the construction of concepts related to childhood and adolescence in scientific medicine during this period. The late nineteenth-century discussions highlighted concerns about the poor health of girls, particularly ailments like chlorosis, attributed to factors such as sex, heredity, and living conditions. The evolving gender order and societal transformations, including educational reforms and women's changing roles, influenced medical perspectives on girls' health.

    The thesis employs discourse analysis, examining medical texts, health studies, and case records from Swedish spas. The first part delves into the portrayal of the "sick girl" between 1870 and 1900, addressing debates on coeducation and the impact of schooling on children's health. It challenges the one-dimensional view of girls as weak and chlorotic, emphasizing a more diverse reality. The second part explores the shift towards the "new girl" from 1900 to 1930, revealing contrasting opinions within scientific and popular medicine. The decline of chlorosis is scrutinized, highlighting disparities in medical discourse regarding girls' health. The study concludes by emphasizing the importance of contextualizing gender and illness constructions, drawing parallels with contemporary debates on eating disorders and reflecting on the implications for present-day medical opinions.

    OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the association of ulcerative colitis (UC) with all-cause dementia and assess differences in those with and without a total colectomy.

    DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: This Swedish prospective register-based study comprised 4.8 million individuals aged at least 59 years between 1964 and 2018 with the linkage of several Swedish national registers.

    PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES: Individuals with dementia were defined according to International Classification of Diseases diagnostic codes and Anatomical Therapeutic Classification codes for medication prescriptions. Fitting Cox hazards models, the risk of developing all-cause dementia in individuals with and without UC was estimated. Further, we compared the risk of all-cause dementia among those with and without a colectomy.

    RESULTS: Among 4 821 488 individuals (52.6% females) followed for 84.1 million person-years between 1964 and 2018, the incidence rate of all-cause dementia was 63.90 (63.73-64.07) events per 10 000 person-years in individuals without UC, 94.80 (92.04-97.64) among those with UC, 95.01 (92.25-97.86) in those with UC but without colectomy and 63.42 (40.92-98.31) in those with UC and a colectomy. Adjusted Cox models showed an increased all-cause dementia risk in individuals with UC (HR 1.07, 95% CI 1.04 to 1.10). We found no differences between unexposed individuals and those with UC and a colectomy (HR 0.89, 95% CI 0.57 to 1.38).

    CONCLUSION: The findings are consistent with previous evidence suggesting a slightly increased dementia risk among individuals with UC. This study provided no evidence of further risk increase of dementia among those who had a colectomy.

    Abstract [en]

    This study contributes to the understanding of how values promote and hinder circular consumer behaviour by examining and learning from the Swedish deposit-refund system for beverage cans and PET bottles. We have used the consumption value theory in our analysis, building on the concepts of circular economy, sustainable consumption and recycling. Data was collected from focus group interviews with young adults in order to identify and explore the ways that values promote and hinder participation. Functional values were found to be at the core of sustainable consumption as a result of financial incentives and the fact that consumers value convenience. The study also highlights the importance that young adults place on emotional values, in particular embarrassment, which hinders them from recycling. When it comes to sustainable consumption, young adults are driven by selfish behaviour, prioritising personal comfort. Social settings were also found to promote and hinder participation in the deposit-refund system. The study finds that an understanding of the reasons why different social groups and age groups approve or disapprove of participation in circular solutions may help design solutions to increase participation in circular solutions and circular economies. The results show that it is important to study the combinations of value dimensions to understand consumer behaviour in a circular system fully.

    Introduction: Increased rates of mental health issues among LGBTQ+ people have been reported during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly among young people.

    Method: Semi-structured interviews were conducted in 2021 with 61 young adult LGBTQ+ people residing in France, Italy, Portugal, Sweden, and the UK. Each interview was summarized on a template covering the participants’ experiences of pandemic restrictions, mental health, and minority stress during this period. A thematic analysis was conducted on the templates.

    Results: The pandemic restrictions had a large impact on the participants’ lives, leaving them stuck at home. Not having access to the LGBTQ+ community was an additional stress, as this is a venue for support. Half of the participants had suffered from mental health issues during the pandemic. Those who were living in non-affirmative households had a particularly difficult time and experienced overwhelming stress. Increased feelings of gender dysphoria were seen among trans participants due to the lack of access to gender-affirming healthcare. Most participants experienced less distal minority stress than usual due to social isolation restrictions.

    Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic and the associated social restrictions had a large impact on the lives of LGBTQ+ young adults. Many experience worse mental health, although relief from distal minority stress was common.

    Policy Implications: Policy makers must consider the needs of LGBTQ+ young adults as they seek to explore and establish their gender and/or sexual identity. During a pandemic, it is particularly important to help young LGBTQ+ people to engage with the LGBTQ+ community.

    Contemporary sport governance contexts are marked by a trend towards efficiency-based board composition and an increasing use of instruments aimed to (re)shape boards. Yet, democratic governance is integral to many countries' sport systems, and research tells us that representation still matters in sport governance. Considering this, the aim with this paper is to provide researchers and practitioners with a vocabulary to understand and address issues of representation in board composition. The paper builds on interviews with nomination committee representatives of 62 Swedish national sport federations (NSFs). The analysis provides insights into the meaning and implications of four distinct views of representation, along with an interpretation of potential responses to board-shaping instruments engendered by these views.

    Research Question: The purpose of this paper is to construct knowledge on the working processes of nomination committees (NCs) in sport and analyze their potential to shape board composition. The significance of such an effort lies in its potential to shed light on the processes preceding the structures and practices created for the wielding of power in sport organizations.

    Research Methods: This paper reports findings based on telephone interviews with NCs of 64 Swedish national sport organizations.

    Results and Findings: The analyses show how NC processes may be distinguished into six components: election of the NC at the general assembly (GA), monitoring of the incumbent board, preparation for nominee identification, assembly of a list of potential nominees, evaluation of potential nominees, and submission of proposed nominees to the GA. Within and across these components, the analyses reveal three aspects particularly powerful in their potential to shape board composition: degree of formalization, network reliance, and transparency.

    Implications: These findings have implications for research and practice. Regarding the former, the study provides a baseline description that can be used in future explorations of the NC process and its determinants and effects in varying contexts. As for the latter, the findings suggest that sport organizations carry an untapped potential in considering NCs’ shaping potential, regardless of whether an ‘adequate’ board is one that is equipped to improve organizational efficiency or one that safeguards representation and democracy.

    While colonization as policy is formally a historic phenomenon in Norway and elsewhere, many former structures of state organization – including their relationship to sport – remain under post-colonial conditions. This paper is concerned with how the Norwegian government contributes to creating a situation, which includes the Norwegian sports confederation (NIF) but excludes the indigenous people Sámi's sports organisation. Based on existing data and literature, we analyse how the state favours NIF through a chain of legitimating acts. Thus, sport is a preserve of colonization, where a one-sided legitimation parallels a de-legitimation of the overarching sport policy goal of sport-for-all. However, there are signs of change whereby actors are challenging NIF’s monopoly and 'older' state-sport regimes.

    Research question: The purpose of this paper is to create knowledge on board-selection processes and their outcomes in terms of board composition. We address two research questions: (1) What evaluative criteria are at play in board-selection processes; and (2) what hierarchies of criteria are formed when evaluative criteria are ranked? The significance of the study lies in contemporary considerations of good governance, in sport members’ (un)equal access to positions of power, and in how issues of representation relate to the legitimacy of sport governance systems and to broader societal patterns of representation, influence, and democracy.

    Research methods: Nomination committees are increasingly used worldwide to further good governance in sport organizations. Our analysis builds on interviews with representatives of 61 out of 71 Swedish national sport organizations’ nomination committees.

    Results and Findings: Our study shows that trade-offs are made not between gender and merit, as previously suggested, but between and among a wide variety of representation criteria and a wide variety of efficiency criteria. We show how tensions between criteria result in trade-offs that imply a ranking of criteria into seven types of hierarchies, only one of which prioritizes a representation-based board composition.

    Implications: Because rankings of multiple evaluative criteria impact any single criterion of interest (e.g. gender), future studies should take into account the range of evaluative criteria at play. For sport management and policy practitioners alike, we provide a tool to understand and address (in)adequate representation but also an imperative to consider the meaning of adequate representation.

    By providing an analytical framework that draws on a conceptualisation of legitimacy in organisation studies, this paper demonstrates that the sport policy process can be understood as an interlinked chain of legitimating acts. Based on recent suggestions in organisation theory literature on how to approach legitimacy and legitimation, we applied the framework on a small sample of published sport policy studies to demonstrate its utility. By applying the framework, six interweaved and interweaving elements of the legitimating act within sport policy processes were identified: legitimacy-seeking organisation, subject, source(s), strategy, bases and scenario. The analysis shows that each of the six elements works by intersecting within each phase of the policy process. The main conclusion is that consequences – often unintended – resulting from legitimating acts in one phase have legitimacy-related implications for the other phases of the policy process. As pressing as pinpointing the use of all elements of the framework is, it is equally important to distinguish each of the elements in order to fulfil the analytical potential of the proposed framework. Since sport policy processes in practice rely primarily on organisations and organisational action, future sport policy research would benefit from this type of framework connecting organisations and organising to policy processes.

    Introduction: Gender affirming surgery of primary and/or secondary sex characteristics has been shown to alleviate gender dysphoria. A descriptive snapshot of current treatment preferences is useful to understand the needs of the transgender population seeking health care. This study aimed to describe preferences for gender affirming treatment, and their correlates, among individuals seeking health care for gender dysphoria in Sweden after major national legislative reforms.

    Methods: Cross-sectional study where transgender patients (n = 232) recruited from all six Gender Dysphoria centers in Sweden 2016-2019, answered a survey on treatment preferences and sociodemographic, health, and gender identity-related information during the same time-period. Factors associated with preferring top surgery (breast augmentation or mastectomy), genital surgery, and other surgery (e.g., facial surgery) were examined in univariable and multivariable regression analyses in the 197 people without prior such treatment. Main study outcomes were preferences for feminizing or masculinizing hormonal and surgical gender affirming treatment.

    Results: The proportion among birth assigned male and assigned female patients preferring top surgery was 55.6% and 88.7%, genital surgery 88.9% and 65.7%, and other surgery (e.g., facial surgery) 85.6% and 22.5%, respectively. Almost all participants (99.1%) wanted or had already received hormonal treatment and most (96.7%) wished for some kind of surgical treatment; 55.0% wanted both top and genital surgery. Preferring a binary pronoun (he/she) and factors indicating more severe gender incongruence were associated with a greater wish for surgical treatment. Participants with somatic comorbidities were less likely to want genital surgery, while aF with lacking social support were less likely to want internal genital surgery, in the multivariable analyses.

    Conclusions: In this sample of Swedish young adults seeking health care for gender dysphoria, preferences for treatment options varied according to perceived gender identity.

    Policy Implications: The study findings underline the need for individualized care and flexible gender affirming treatment options. The role of somatic comorbidities should be further explored, and support should be offered to transgender people in need. There is an unmet need for facial surgery among aM.

    The adrenalitis found in autoimmune Addison’s disease (AAD) is considered having a Th1-driven pathogenesis. Circulating Th1- and Th2-associated chemokines responsible for the trafficking of leukocytes to inflammatory sites are markers for the Th1/Th2 balance. The aim of the study was to assess if the same daily hydrocortisone dose of 30 mg given in either 2 or 4 doses to patients with AAD could affect the Th1/Th2 balance of circulating chemokines.

    Fifteen patients (6 women) with AAD were included in this randomised, placebo controlled, double blind cross-over study. Samples for chemokines, Th1-associated (CXCL10, CXCL11) and Th2-associated (CCL17, CCL22), were drawn 5 times during a 24-h period at the end of each treatment period and analysed with Luminex. Seven control subjects did the same diurnal blood sampling once. Subjects with AAD had higher median diurnal levels of the Th1-associated chemokines than controls, CXCL10 [43 (33–56) pg/ml vs. 22 (19–34) pg/ml, p<0.01] and CXCL11 [37 (29–48) pg/ml vs. 16 (9–24) pg/ml, p<0.001], whereas no significant difference was found regarding the Th2-related chemokines. Similar chemokine levels were found when the same hydrocortisone dose of 30 mg was divided in 2 or 4 doses. Levels of CXCL11 correlated negatively with scores of SF-36 domains (high score indicate better health) of General Health (GH) and total score for Physical Component Summary (PCS), and these negative correlations were most pronounced at 04:00 h on the 2-dose regimen. Patients with AAD have a dominant Th1 chemokine profile that partially correlates to reduced quality of life.

    Objective: Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is the first-line treatment for insomnia, but half of the patients do not reach remission. This study aimed to explore subjective remission by investigating the characteristics of patients who reported lingering sleep problems after CBT-I.

    Methods: Secondary analyses of a randomized controlled trial of group CBT-I in 72 primary care patients with insomnia disorder. Sociodemographic characteristics and outcomes (insomnia severity, sleep variables, hypnotics use, fatigue, depressive symptoms, and dysfunctional beliefs/attitudes), including baseline data and symptom change, were investigated in relation to patients' posttreatment response to the yes-or-no question “Would you say that you have sleep problems?”

    Results: A total of 56.9% of patients reported sleep problems after CBT-I. At baseline, they had worse depressive symptoms (14.9 (SD 7.5) vs. 10.2 (SD 5.9), p = 0.006) and more awakenings (2.6 (SD 1.5) vs. 1.8 (SD 1.3), p = 0.034) than those in subjective remission from sleep problems. Patients in the non-remission and remission groups showed similar improvements in sleep, fatigue, and depressive symptoms, but patients in the non-remission group had improved less in insomnia severity, dysfunctional beliefs/attitudes about sleep, and hypnotic use. In patients with more pronounced depressive symptoms before CBT-I, change in depressive symptoms during treatment partially explained subjective remission from sleep problems.

    Discussion: More severe depressive symptoms prior to CBT-I and less improvements in depressive symptoms during treatment predicted remaining subjective sleep problems after treatment. These findings highlight the importance of assessing depressive symptoms in primary care patients with insomnia, as patients with pronounced depressive symptoms may need tailored treatment.

    In Sweden, more than 2,200 individuals are diagnosed with rectal cancer each year and surgical resection is the cornerstone of treatment. Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) was introduced for abdominal rectal cancer resection in the 1990s. Proven advantages of MIS in the short term include less intraoperative bleeding, less postoperative pain, faster postoperative mobilization, and shorter hospital stay. Large randomized studies have also shown that MIS is not inferior to OPEN with regard to the oncological short-term or long-term outcome.

    The aim of this thesis was to increase the knowledge of MIS from a Swedish perspective regarding long-term oncological outcome, socioeconomic aspects, and the postoperative inflammatory response in curative abdominal rectal cancer surgery.

    Study I included all patients who were diagnosed with clinical stage I-III rectal cancer during 2010-2016. More than 8,300 patients were identified via the Swedish Colorectal Cancer Registry (SCRCR). The study had a so-called non-inferiority design and investigated overall 5-year survival. The results showed that survival was not worse in patients who underwent minimally invasive surgery in comparison to patients who underwent open surgery.

    Study II included all patients who were diagnosed with pathological stage I-III cancer of the colon 2010-2016. More than 11,000 patients were identified via the SCRCR. The study was designed in the same way as Study I. The results demonstrated that minimally invasive surgery was not inferior to open surgery.

    Study III analysed the potential impact of socioeconomic status, measured as level of education and household income, regarding the likelihood of receiving minimally invasive surgery. All patients who underwent curative abdominal rectal resection surgery during 2010-2016 were included. More than 8,000 patients were identified. The results showed that patients with the highest level of education and those in the highest income quartile were more likely to be operated on with minimally invasive technique.

    Study IV analysed the inflammatory response, measured as serum C-reactive protein during postoperative days 1-5, in all 520 patients undergoing abdominal rectal resection in Örebro between 2011 and 2021. Following exclusions based on postoperative adverse events, 382 patients remained for final analysis. The study demonstrated a trend for a less pronounced inflammatory response in patients operated with robot-assisted laparoscopy compared with conventional laparoscopy.

    AIM: The aim was to compare five-year overall survival in a national cohort of patients undergoing curative abdominal resection for rectal cancer by laparoscopic (LAP) or open (OPEN) technique.

    METHODS: All patients diagnosed with clinical stage I-III rectal cancer and who underwent LAP or OPEN abdominal curative surgery between 2010 and 2016 in Sweden were retrieved from the Swedish Colorectal Cancer Registry. A non-inferiority study design was employed with a statistical power of 90%, a one-side type I error of 2.5%, and a non-inferiority margin of 2%. The analyses were performed as intention-to-treat and the relationship between surgical technique and overall mortality within five years was analyzed. Multilevel regression models with the patients matched by propensity scores adjusted for patient and tumour related variables.

    RESULTS: A total of 8410 cancer stage I-III patients were included whereof 2094 LAP (24.9%) and 6316 underwent OPEN (74.9%) and were followed until December 31, 2020. Multivariable Cox regression demonstrated that five-year overall survival was higher in LAP; Hazard Ratio (HR): 0.877;(95% CI: 0.877-0.993). Outcome was similar when employing multiple imputation and propensity score matching. When excluding cT4 there was no difference; HR: 0.885;(95% CI: 0.790-1.033). At five years follow up, local recurrence was not different, 2.9% in LAP and 3.6% in OPEN (P=0.075), while metastatic disease was more frequent in OPEN, 19.6% compared with 15.6% in LAP (P<0.001).

    CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that LAP was not inferior to OPEN with regard to overall five-year survival. These results support the use of laparoscopic surgery.

Patients were identified in the Swedish Colorectal Cancer Registry from which all data was retrieved. The analyses were performed as intention-to-treat and the relationship between surgical technique (MIS or OPEN) and overall mortality within five years was analysed. For the primary research question a non-inferiority hypothesis was assumed with a statistical power of 90%, a one-side type I error of 2.5%, and a non-inferiority margin of 2%. For the secondary analyses, multilevel survival regression models with the patients matched by propensity scores were employed, adjusted for patient- and tumuor-related variables.

    RESULTS: A total of 11605 pathological UICC cancer stage I-III patients were included with 3297 MIS (28.4%) and 8308 OPEN (71.6%) and were followed until December 31, 2020. The primary analysis demonstrated superiority for MIS compared to OPEN. The multilevel survival regression analyses confirmed that five-year overall survival was higher in MIS with a hazard ratio (HR) of 0.874 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.791-0.965), and if excluding pT4, outcome was similar, with a HR of 0.847 (95% CI: 0.756-0.948).

    CONCLUSION: This observational study demonstrated that MIS was favourable to OPEN with regard to five-year overall survival. These results support the use of laparoscopic colon cancer surgery in routine practise.

    Abstract [en]

    The field of ICT4D has witnessed a crisis of its core assumptions in terms of usability of ICTs within development, as well as the meaning of “development” itself. Such a pars destruens (deconstructing the main assumptions of the field) should in our view be accompanied with a pars construens which embraces antifascism, an element of liberation movements opposing violently oppressive ideas and systems, as a core value. In this paper we set the epistemological basis for an antifascist view of ICT4D, positioning such a view in history and illuminating the contribution of antifascism to the core idea of “making a better world” that inspires ICT4D research. We contribute to the existing literature by spelling out antifascist values in relation to ICT4D, and articulating these with respect to research objects and philosophies that the field embraces.

    Hur formas en inkluderande social samvaro i skolan? Och hur uppstår motsatsen; sociala miljöer präglade av misstro, intern segregation och kränkningar? Frågorna är viktiga för alla skolor, men ställs på sin spets vid försök till styrd skolintegration, där kommuner arbetar aktivt för att skapa en mer socioekonomiskt och etniskt blandad elevsammansättning.

    Empiriskt fokus för denna artikel är ett kommunalt initiativ där elever flyttats från ett strukturellt missgynnat område till fyra andra skolor i en medelstor stad i Sverige. Med utgångspunkt i Axel Honneths teori om moraliska erkännanden analyseras de flyttade elevernas upplevelser av erkännanden och kränkningar och hur dessa påverkat deras förut-sättningar att bli en del av en ny gemenskap.

    I artikeln fokuseras särskilt på hur förekomst av eller brist på omsorg, respekt och solidaritet påverkar elevers möjligheter att utveckla en positiv relation till sig själva och andra, något som spelar en avgörande betydelse för deras lärande och utveckling. Sammanfattningsvis presenteras en konceptualisering av olika former av erkännanden och kränkningar i skolans sociala samvaro och hur dessa kan komma till konkret uttryck.

    The aim of this article is to synthesize theoretical and empirical research on agonism in education into teaching principles. Agonistic theory underscores the role of conflict, emotions, and collective identities in democratic classroom discussions. Empirical studies on agonism in education provide empirical insights into how these aspects are played out in teaching practices. By synthesizing both theoretical development and empirical findings on agonism in education, this article suggests four principles for agonistic teaching. The suggested principles aim to function as a synthetization of research valuable to the research field of democratic education and as tools for teachers who want to explore the possibilities of agonism in their teaching.

    Undervisning i den högre utbildning har de senaste åren genomgått stora förändringar till följd av omställningen under pandemin och de förväntningar och erfarenheter som följt i spåren av detta. Lärare har utvecklat nya former av undervisning med digitala verktyg vilket också föranlett behov av support från nya roller kopplat till undervisning. Hrastinski (2018) poängterar att digitaliseringen kräver fortsatt pedagogisk utveckling och genomtänkta strategier. Detta innebär att lärare vid högskolor och universitet behöver delta i digitaliseringsprocessen, skapa välstrukturerade och ändamålsenliga studieanvisningar samt att använda rätt digitalt verktyg för rätt ändamål. Det krävs förändrade kunskaper, kompetenser och ett ökat lärande mellan olika roller för att undervisning ska ske med hög kvalitet. En viktig utgångspunkt är därmed att det inte bara handlar om att som lärare erhålla support utan det som tidigare i mångt och mycket var lärarprofessionens område och ansvar delas nu också med andra och nyare yrkesgrupper.

    Studien handlar om hur interaktionen mellan lärare och andra roller så som tex. IKT-medarbetare möjliggör och skapar förutsättningar för nya former av kollegialitet liksom organisering av undervisning i den högre undervisningen.

    När lärare, IKT-pedagoger och andra medarbetare i högre utbildning ställs inför nya utmaningar – såsom till exempel den ökade digitaliseringen i högre utbildning – sker det kollegiala lärandet utifrån nya premisser. Studiens teoretiska ramverk utgår från den sociokulturella synen på undervisning och lärande där lärandet är en ständigt pågående och social process vilket sker i nära samverkan med andra människor. Det betyder att det finns en kollektiv syn på bildande av kunskap där den omgivande sociala och kulturella omgivningen formar en individs sätt att tänka och agera (Elmgren & Henriksson, 2010).

    Syftet med studien är att synliggöra nya former av interaktioner mellan lärarkollegor och IKT-personal samt hur organiserandet av undervisning förändras utifrån den digitala lärmiljön. Studien undersöker på vilket sätt undervisningen och arbetet i lärarkollegiet med stödjande funktioner förändrats i övergången från campusbaserad undervisning till delvis eller helt distansbaserad undervisning under och efter pandemin.

    Analysen bygger på att lärande kan delas in i två delar, en intermental (tillsammans med andra) och en intramental (inom den enskilde) (Vygotskij, 1962, 1978). I studien analyserar vi hur olika roller kopplade till undervisning med ökade digitala inslag har supportat varandra liksom genom detta lärande skapat nya kollegiala lärmiljöer. Genom att studien lyfter fram och diskuterar aspekter av hur olika roller ser på sin egen kunskap och sin egen förmåga att bidra till andras kunskaper diskuterar vi i studien hur ett sociokulturellt synsätt på den digitala lärmiljön kan bidra till goda förutsättningar att organisera undervisning som främjar studenters lärande.

    Studien har en kvalitativ forskningsdesign där data samlats in med semistrukturerade intervjuer (15 stycken) vid två lärosäten i Sverige. Informanterna har olika roller i undervisning såsom, lärare, IKT-personal samt roller med lednings-chefsansvar.

    Preliminära slutsatser från studien pekar mot att fler roller än den traditionella lärarrollen har kommit att bli en viktig part i undervisning som sker i digital lärmiljö och ökat behov av interaktion för att utveckla lärarskapet. Interaktionen mellan lärare och övriga kollegor samt interaktion mellan lärare och studenter verkar kräva mer digital närvaro än fysisk närvaro vid traditionell undervisning. Behovet av att känna sig som en del i ett kollegium är viktig och den digitala utvecklingen skapar möjligheter till flexibilitet men också en känsla av ensamhet där kollegor inte finns i närheten som tidigare.

    Olika former av digital undervisning har under flera år varit under utveckling i högre utbildning. Genom pandemin intensifierades denna utveckling och frågor om studenters lärande kopplat till olika former av digital undervisning är numer ständigt aktuella. I den här studien undersöks hur lärmiljö som innehåller hög grad av digitala inslag (helt och delvis), påverkar studenters lärande och motivation med utgångspunkt i teorin om Self Determination Theory (SDT) (Ryan & Deci, 2000). Studier av detta är i stark framväxt och till exempel så har den tidigare forskningen visat hur studenters upplevelse av de tre grundläggande behoven i SDT förstärkte lärandet och visade på hög grad av korrelation till lärandet, också i digital undervisning.

    En av utgångspunkterna i forskning om studenters lärande är att studenters uppfattning av lärmiljön antingen kan stödja eller hindra de grundläggande behoven av att känna sig autonom, kompetent och samhörig, vilket därmed också påverkar hur studenters lärande tar sig uttryck. (Aelterman et al., 2019). Denna studie ansluter till forskning av lärmiljöer som menar att lärmiljö är ett resultat av hur studenter uppfattar och förhåller sig till undervisning och lärande (se tex. Fraser, 1998). I studien definieras lärmiljö som; … the social, psychological and pedagogical contexts in which learning occurs and which affect student achievement and attitudes” (Fraser, 1998, p. 3). Denna tradition av lärmiljö omfattar enligt Abualrub et al. (2013) aspekter såsom tex. relationer och mellan studenter och lärare/studenter, lärstrategier/motivation, stödjande lärtekniker och undervisningsklimat liksom mer formella delar som kursplaner/anvisningar och mål. Aspekter som också har varit viktiga i genomförandet av föreliggande studie.

    Syftet med studien är att beskriva hur studenter uppfattar lärmiljön då hela, eller delar av undervisningen är digital, och utifrån SDT analysera vilken betydelse detta har för deras förhållningssätt till lärande. Ett specifikt bidrag om lärmiljöer är studiens utgångspunkt i tidigare forskning som konstaterat att osäkerheter i lärmiljön bidrar till att studenter antar ytinlärningsstrategier (Englund et al., 2022). Genom vår studie av digitala lärmiljöer kan vi fördjupa förståelsen om sådana osäkerheter liksom studenters strategier att hantera dem i digital undervisning, vilket i förlängningen också kan bidra till en diskussion om studenters lärande.

    Studien har en kvalitativ forskningsdesign och bygger på kvalitativa intervjuer med 18 studenter vid två svenska lärosäten. Genom att studera hur studenter som deltagit i online-undervisning under pandemin uppfattat sin lärmiljö - starkt präglad av digitala verktyg – och hur man motiverats av aspekter i lärmiljön, lämnas därmed ett teoretiskt bidrag till vad i digitala lärmiljöer som kan frammana olika typer av lärande och hur osäkerheter i lärmiljön bidrar till detta. En indelning av digital lärmiljö görs bland annat med en kategorisering i termer av asynkront- och synkront lärande. Studiens resultat ger även ett praktiskt bidrag till diskussionen om hur digitala lärmiljöer kan stärka respektive minska studenters uppfattningar av att känna sig autonoma, kompetenta och samhöriga. På så sätt undersöker studien på ett fördjupat sätt hur studenter uppfattar den digitala lärmiljön och hur den påverkar lärandet. Genom en sådan analys och diskussion, skapas insikter om hur undervisning i högre utbildning - som bygger på hög grad av digitala verktyg – kan planeras och genomföras för att det som tidigare litteratur benämnt djupinlärning kan främjas. Något som i förlängningen också kan ses som ett av målen i högre utbildning.

    In memory, familiar but no longer relevant information may disrupt encoding and retrieval of to-be-learned information. While it has been demonstrated that the ability to resolve proactive interference (PI) in working memory (WM) is reduced in aging, the neuroanatomical components of this decline have yet to be determined. Hippocampal (HC) involvement in age-related decline in control of PI is currently not known. In particular, the association between HC subfield volumes and control of PI in WM has not been examined previously. Here we investigate the associations between mean level and 5-year trajectories of gray matter subfield volumes and PI in WM across the adult life span (N = 157). Longitudinal analyses over 5-years across all participants revealed that reduced volume in the subiculum was related to impaired control of PI. Age-stratified analyses showed that this association was most pronounced in older adults. Furthermore, we found that in older adults the effect of age on PI was mediated by GM volume in the HC. The current results show that HC volume is associated with the ability to control PI in WM, and that these associations are modulated by age.

    Abstract [en]

    Given the profound consequences of post-separation violence on the well-being and quality of life of many women and children, protecting victims from further violence is a paramount concern. Understanding the complex challenges faced by women at risk for such violence is crucial for improving strategies for managing this risk and ensuring the safety of these women and children. In Sweden, access to society’s protective interventions often relies on the women actively seeking them. The aim of this study was to analyse the process of protection against post-separation violence as described by women with children in Sweden. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with women who had experienced domestic violence and were assessed with low to moderate risk of revictimization. The interviews explored strategies they employed on their own and the risk management interventions they received. Through thematic analysis, we identified five themes: activating own safety strategies, seeking societal protection, utilizing societal protection, bridging gaps in societal protection, and resigning to live unprotected. Together, they form a process of protection characterized by mothers employing numerous strategies at different phases to safeguard themselves and their children, relying on their own initiative as well as the assistance offered by society. However, despite these efforts, some mothers and children remained unprotected and were obligated to resign to live with post-separation violence. This study underscores the extensive demands placed on women subjected to violence, despite the presence of relatively strong legal rights and a well-developed societal system.

    This article discusses the imperative of recognizing the sexual aspect of older audults, particularly within residental aged care. By acknowledging sexuality as an integral facet of overall health, the argument posits that staff can foster a secure and supportive environments. However, to achieve this, staff must enhance their awareness and undergo training. The article underscores the significance of promoting and supporting residents' sexual needs and health to cultivate a more holistic and well-being-oriented care environment.

    Thinking through digital mediations and spatialities of platform based work: A roundtable reflection2023Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

    This paper is a unique roundtable discussion between geographers to explore, contextualize and problematize the role of geography in the gig economy. It brings together eight researchers from across Europe all working with qualitative methods and studying the gig economy. Based on reflections and commentaries regarding the spatialities and temporalities in and of the gig economy, we offer an innovative approach to exploring complicated factors in an emerging and rapidly growing field. We highlight the multiple layers of geography in physical and digital spaces and the, sometimes blurry, interactions between these. We also show how temporalities shape the geographies of the gig economy. This paper contributes to developing, deepening and advancing theoretical challenges in understanding the gig economy. It also brings these challenges into an accessible, yet thorough publication that can be used in teaching about the gig economy and digital geography. We provide a pedagogical tool to support university teachers in using this document in their courses.

    As part of a longitudinal research project on the transition from physical education teacher education (PETE) to school physical education (PE) in Sweden and exploring whether and how PETE matters, this article uses narrative inquiry to ‘represent’ a PE teacher’s professional journey from PETE to the induction phase of PE teaching. The study focuses on his use of, and reflections on, ‘assessment for learning’ (AfL) at different stages of his teaching experience. The purpose of the study is to contribute knowledge about how positive experiences of AfL during PETE can enable the use of AfL in school PE for a newly qualified teacher. This is done by analysing one male PETE student’s reflections on AfL in the context of a campus-based course on PE assessment, his use of and reflections on AfL during his practicum, and in school PE as a newly qualified teacher. The data generation consisted of recordings of a PETE seminar, a stimulated recall interview with the participant during his final school placement, and two interviews with him in his role as a newly qualified PE teacher at two different schools. Through the PE teacher’s tale, we show how the campus-based course on PE assessment in PETE and the student teacher’s positive experience of using AfL during his practicum seem to have inspired him in his later positions. The results are discussed in relation to the perspective of occupational socialisation theory. This narrative inquiry suggests that PETE can make a difference for student teachers who are prepared to face the challenges of the induction phase of PE teaching and are able to navigate between the barriers that get in their way. We conclude the paper with some considerations regarding the study’s potential strength (trustworthiness), sharing (transferability) and service (usefulness).

    Att bedöma och hantera risk för våld i nära relation i gles- och landsbygd: Nyttiggörande av forskningsresultat från RISKSAM-projektet i dialog med socialtjänst och polis2023Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)

    Syftet med projektet har varit att förmedla forskningsresultat om riskhantering och samverkan avseende våld i nära relation, stalkning och hedersrelaterat våld och förtryck till yrkesverksamma inom polis och socialtjänst, samt att undersöka utmaningar och behov rörande frågor om riskbedömning, riskhantering och samverkan kring våld i nära relationer i gles- och landsbygdskommuner.

    Projektet knyter an till forskningsprogrammet RISKSAM som syftar till att implementera och utvärdera en hållbar och evidensbaserad arbetsmodell, RISKSAM, för arbetet med riskhantering och samverkan vad gäller våld i nära relation. RISKSAM är en förkortning för RISKhantering och SAMverkan. En huvudsaklig ambition med nyttiggörandeprojektet har varit att medverka till att sprida information om RISKSAM och i dialog med de yrkesverksamma utveckla modellen ännu mer specifikt till de utmaningar som gles- och landsbygd står inför.

    Under våren 2023 har vi således besökt praktiker inom socialtjänst och polis i gles- och landsbygd. Forskare och doktorander inom RISKSAM-programmet besökte regionerna Dalarna, Värmland, Västra Götaland, Västerbotten, Örebro och Östergötland, där ett eller flera kommunbesök genomfördes i varje region. Varje besök har bestått av presentationer om RISKSAM och preliminära resultat ur detta projekt, samt fokusgruppsintervjuer om gles- och landsbygdens specifika utmaningar och de yrkesverksammas behov och stöd.

    Våra resultat visade att det finns både utmaningar och möjligheter med arbetet med riskbedömning, riskhantering och samverkan kring ärenden med våld i nära relationer i gles- och landsbygdskommuner. I riskbedömningsarbetet fann vi att det fanns utmaningar i att identifiera våld men också att det kan finnas bristande organisatorisk kompetens att riskbedöma. Enskilda medarbetare har kompetens men omsättningen av personal och svårigheter att rekrytera, försvårar upprätthållandet av kompetens inom organisationen. Arbetet med riskbedömning kan även försvåras på grund av olika faktorer och brist på erfarenhet då dessa ärenden är sällan-ärenden.

    I rapportens andra del redovisas utmaningar och möjligheter med riskhantering. Vi belyser verksamheternas bristande förutsättningar och de få insatser som finns att erbjuda på hemmaplan, att verktygslådan att arbeta med är liten, och att det finns en svårighet att hantera möjligheten till anonymitet på mindre orter. Vi lyfter både utmaningar och möjligheter med glesbefolkade samhällen, som fördelen med närhet till varandra och en känsla av att ta hand om varandra, men också nackdelarna med att det är svårt att vara anonym, ta emot insatser och att återvända till hemorten efter våldet och en vistelse i ett skyddat boende.

    I del tre i rapporten beskriver vi de utmaningar och möjligheter som yrkesverksamma upplever i relation till samverkan – både intern och extern – i ärenden med våld i nära relation. Detta innefattade, bland annat, hur den geografiska närheten (till exempel att sitta i samma byggnad) mellan yrkesverksamma underlättar samverkan. Samtidigt är samverkansformerna sårbara utifrån att de baseras på person snarare än funktion och den externa samverkan som sker är nästan uteslutande ostrukturerad. Det finns dock en vilja till ökad samverkan och existerande plattformar för detta, dock upplever flera yrkesverksamma att det saknas rätt verktyg för att åstadkomma detta.

    Rapporten avslutas med en sammanfattande diskussion om utmaningar och möjligheter i arbetet med våld i nära relation i gles- och landsbygd. Här lämnas även konkreta förslag på hur praktiker i gles- och landsbygd kan stärkas i sitt arbete i relation till riskbedömning, riskhantering och samverkan.

    Abstract [en]

    OBJECTIVE: The aim was to describe how the patient perspective is captured in clinical research on ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV).

    METHODS: This integrative review included 2149 publications found in four different databases and manual searches. After screening, 156 articles remained. All articles were sorted and categorized, and 77 original articles were analysed further.

    RESULTS: The patient perspective was captured with patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), single-item questionnaires, project-specific questionnaires and interviews. The most common aspects measured were health-related quality of life, anxiety and depression, and fatigue, and the least common were lifestyle habits, relationships and self-management.

    CONCLUSION: The patient perspective was captured predominantly with generic PROMs and occasionally with a qualitative approach. AVV is a lifelong disease, and the results from this review show that not all aspects of importance to patients are covered with the PROMs used in research. Future studies should include the areas that are the most important for patients.

    Grounded in scholarship on multilingualism, this multimodal case study aims toidentify factors related to ideologies of language and culture in an Englishlanguage classroom in a public lower secondary school in Sweden for an enhancedunderstanding of learning conditions for multilingual students. Using atriangulation of methods, participant observation, materials analysis, andinterviews, the study examines teaching practice, materiality, language use andteachers’ perspectives on multilingualism and their own teaching practices in themultilingual classroom. The study finds a predominance of factors rooted ideologiesof monolingualism and monoculturalism. Teaching practice was marked by thetraditional approach to teaching English with a focus on Britain/the U.K. as ahomogenous monocultural and monolingual nation and a Swedishness normdominated teaching practice and classroom interaction: extensive usage of theSwedish language, examples of teaching strategies related to a contrastive Swedish -English grammar approach and a study of target language culture from a nationalSwedish perspective. An application of Nancy Hornberger’s model of the continuaof biliteracy to the data identifies teaching practice in the classroom as close to the privileged ends. The analysis of interviews suggests that the traditional approach was normalized and that teachers had limited awareness of pedagogical strategiesfor the inclusion of multilingual students.
