Application of Principles-based Accounting Standards: the case of internally generated intangibles2020Doktorsavhandling, monografi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The uncertainty involved in the application of principles-based financial accounting standards raises the general question of how such standards are applied. The International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) are principles-based, meaning that they provide a conceptual basis for application rather than detailed rules. This means that there is inherent room for judgment in the application, which might affect financial reporting comparability. This study aims to explore and understand the application of principles-based accounting standards. The study depicts the actual valuation of internally generated intangibles from a local perspective.

The theoretical basis of this thesis is building on a Scandinavian institutional tradition since the focus is on a phenomenon that is shaped within a local context of meaning, where the judgments and the reasoning behind decisions occur. The study has a design that allowed for gathering data from several different organizations. Listed Swedish companies of different sizes and industries dealing with intangible accounting decisions and judgments are included.

There are three main conclusions from this study. First, there is a continuous ambition for instrumentality and efficiency when making decisions regarding the valuation of internally generated intangibles. Second, the appearance of the company is always reflected against the expectations of relevant actors. Third, there is a co-existence of these two rationales. The judgments and the decisions within the companies are not independent of the external expectations and demands. Rather, they are affected by them through all the phases connected to research and development. A number of contributions to the literature are identified. These relate to the understanding of the application of principles-based accounting standards at an organizational level, and the development of the theoretical perspective within accounting research.

Challenges in the provision of digital technologies to elderly with dementia to support ageing in place: A case study of a Swedish municipality2020Ingår i: Disability and Rehabilitation: Assistive Technology, ISSN 1748-3107, E-ISSN 1748-3115Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The aim of this paper is to identify structural problems and challenges for the delivery of digital technologies for ageing in place to elderly with dementia.

Methods: To that end, I conducted a case study in a Swedish municipality.

Results: The results showed that elderly with dementia are not exploiting their full potential of receiving help in the form of technology, since the four conditions of the Consumer Direction (Control and Direct services – Variety of digital technologies for ageing in place options – Information and Support – Participation in systems design) were met to a very low degree.

Conclusions: I propose that the municipality in question creates a proper knowledge-sharing platform so that occupational therapists are well informed about digital technologies for ageing in place, to allow them to provide accurate information and support to elderly with dementia, resulting in a possible increase in use of technology and subsequently support the empowerment goal of Consumer Direction. I also believe, according to the findings of this study, that the module of Information and Support should be treated as the most important condition for achieving increased Consumer Direction.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Compensatory Movement in Upper Limb Prosthesis Users during Activity Performance2019Ingår i: ISPO 17th World Congress:  Basics to Bionics: Abstract Book, ISPO , 2019, s. -512Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: Low dexterity of conventional two-function (open, close) myoelectric hand prostheses with limited wrist movement often leads to compensatory shoulder and elbow movements, e.g. excess shoulder abduction and elbow flexion. Compensatory movements may lead to musculoskeletal pain [1] and it is thus important to identify prosthesis users with compensatory movements and to develop preventive treatments for musculoskeletal pain.

AIM: The study aim was to measure and compare compensatory movements during activity performance among upper limb prosthesis users with different levels of myoelectric control.

METHOD: Twenty-seven users of conventional myoelectric hand prosthesis performed the Assessment of Capacity for Myoelectric Control (ACMC) at the Örebro Limb Deficiency and Arm Prosthesis Centre. The performances were recorded and analyzed with Dartfish motion capture video analysis software. The software was used to track and measure the maximum angles for shoulder abduction and elbow flexion at the non-prosthetic and prosthetic sides during the activity performance. Two independent raters used Dartfish to analyze 10 videos and Intra-class Correlation Coefficient (ICC) was used to calculate inter-rater reliability. The ability to control a myoelectric prosthetic hand was assessed by the ACMC.

RESULTS: The within-individual differences for shoulder abduction ranged from 2° to 52° and for elbow flexion from 1° to 66°. When compared between prosthetic and non-prosthetic side, larger differences in shoulder abduction and elbow flexion were found among the users with ACMC ≤ 0 than users with ACMC > 0 (Fig.1a). When comparing the within-individual side differences between prosthesis users with ACMC ≤0 and users with ACMC >0, a significant angle difference was found in the elbows (p=0.03) but not in the shoulders (p=0.34) (Fig.1b). Inter-rater reliability between the two independent raters was excellent (ICC 0.91).

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Compensatory elbow movements during activity performance are higher in upper limb prosthesis users with low level of myoelectric control. Prevention for musculoskeletal pain should consist of both training for improved prosthetic control and improved prosthetic use in activity performance. Measurement of compensatory movements can help to identify amputees with frequent compensatory movements. Future studies are needed to investigate the effect of ability to control myoelectric prosthesis on musculoskeletal pain.

Cognitive load and compensatory movement in learning to use a multi-function hand2019Ingår i: ISPO 17th World Congress: Basics to Bionics: Abstract Book, ISPO , 2019, s. 52-52Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: Recent technology provides increased dexterity in multi-function hands with the potential to reduce compensatory body movements. However, it is challenging to learn how to operate a hand that has up to 36 grips. While the cognitive load required to use these hands is unknown, it is clear that if the cognitive load is too high, the user may stop using the multi-functional hand or may not take full advantage of its advanced features.

AIM: The aim of this project was to compare cognitive load and compensatory movement in using a multi-function hand versus a conventional myo hand.

METHOD: An experienced prosthesis user was assessed using his conventional myo hand and an unfamiliar iLimb Ultra hand, with two-site control and the same wrist for both prostheses. He was trained to use power grip, lateral grip and pinch grip and then completed the SHAP test while wearing the Tobii Pro 2 eye-tracking glasses. Pupil diameter (normal range: 2-4mm during normal light) was used to indicate the amount of cognitive load.[1] The number of eye fixations on the prosthesis indicate the need of visual feedback during operation. Dartfish motion capture was used to track the maximum angles for shoulder abduction and elbow flexion.

RESULTS: Larger pupils were found in the use of Ilimb ultra (2.6-5.6mm) than in the use of conventional myo hand (2.4-3.5mm) during the SHAP abstract light tests. The pupils dilated most often during changing grips, e.g. switching to pinch grip for the tripod task (from 2.7 to 5.6mm). After training of using power grip and pinch grip repeatedly, the maximum pupil diameter decreased from 5.6 to 3.3mm. The number of eye fixations on the I-limb ultra (295 fixations) were also higher than on the conventional myo-hand (139 fixations). Smaller shoulder abduction and elbow flexion were observed in the use of I-limb ultra (16.6°, 36.1°) than in the use of conventional myo hand (57°, 52.7°).

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Although it is cognitively demanding to learn to use a multi-function hand, it is possible to decrease this demand with adequate prosthetic training. Our results suggest that using a multi-function hand enables reduction of body compensatory movement, however at the cost of a higher cognitive load. Further research with more prosthesis users and other multi-function hands is needed to confirm the study findings.

Estimating Optimal Placement for a Robot in Social Group Interaction2019Ingår i: IEEE International Workshop on Robot and Human Communication (ROMAN), IEEE, 2019Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we present a model to propose anoptimal placement for a robot in a social group interaction. Ourmodel estimates the O-space according to the F-formation theory. The method automatically calculates a suitable placementfor the robot. An evaluation of the method has been performedby conducting an experiment where participants stand in differ-ent formations and a robot is teleoperated to join the group. Inone condition, the operator positions the robot according to thespecified location given by our algorithm. In another condition, operators have the freedom to position the robot according totheir personal choice. Follow-up questionnaires were performedto determine which of the placements were preferred by theparticipants. The results indicate that the proposed methodfor automatic placement of the robot is supported from theparticipants. The contribution of this work resides in a novelmethod to automatically estimate the best placement of therobot, as well as the results from user experiments to verify thequality of this method. These results suggest that teleoperatedrobots such as mobile robot telepresence systems could benefitfrom tools that assist operators in placing the robot in groupsin a socially accepted manner.

    Abstract [en]

Public sector outsourcing, in the form of private production of tax-financed services, is on the increase with economic and social consequences for consumers, taxpayers, and employees. The development has given rise to so-called quasi-markets with choice and competition between public, for-profit, and non-profit providers. By introducing the main characteristics of quasi-markets with a focus on prices, this article provides background perspectives. It sets the stage for the other six articles on public sector outsourcing in this special issue of the journal.

Students' Creative Process in Mathematics: Insights from Eye-Tracking-Stimulated Recall Interview on Students' Work on Multiple Solution Tasks2019Ingår i: International Journal of Science and Mathematics Education, ISSN 1571-0068, E-ISSN 1573-1774Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Students' creative process in mathematics is increasingly gaining significance in mathematics education research. Researchers often use Multiple Solution Tasks (MSTs) to foster and evaluate students' mathematical creativity. Yet, research so far predominantly had a product-view and focused on solutions rather than the process leading to creative insights. The question remains unclear how students' process solving MSTs looks like-and if existing models to describe (creative) problem solving can capture this process adequately. This article presents an explorative, qualitative case study, which investigates the creative process of a school student, David. Using eye-tracking technology and a stimulated recall interview, we trace David's creative process. Our findings indicate what phases his creative process in the MST involves, how new ideas emerge, and in particular where illumination is situated in this process. Our case study illustrates that neither existing models on the creative process, nor on problem solving capture David's creative process fully, indicating the need to partially rethink students' creative process in MSTs.

Samtyckesdynamiker: Sex, våldtäkt och gråzonen däremellan2020 (uppl. 1)Bok (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [sv]

Hostile interactions in the family: Patterns and links to youth externalizing problems2019Ingår i: Journal of Early Adolescence, ISSN 0272-4316, E-ISSN 1552-5449, Vol. 40, nr 1, s. 56-82Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In line with family systems theory, we examined patterns of hostile interactions within families and their associations with externalizing problems among early-adolescent children. Using hostility scores based on observational data of six dyadic interactions during a triadic interaction (n = 462; i.e., child-to-mother, mother-to-child, child-to-father, father-to-child, mother-to-father, father-to-mother)—latent profile analysis supported three distinct profiles of hostility. The low/moderate hostile profile included families with the lowest levels of hostility across dyads; families in the mutual parent-child hostileprofile scored higher on parent-child hostility, but lower on interparental hostility; the hostile parentprofile showed higher levels of parent-to-child and interparental hostility, but lower child-to-parent hostility. Concerning links to youth outcomes, youth in the mutual parent-child hostile profile reported the highest level of externalizing problems, both concurrently and longitudinally. These results point to the importance of examining larger family patterns of hostility to fully understand the association between family hostility and youth adjustment.

Life Strategies, Work and Health in People with Usher Syndrome2020Doktorsavhandling, sammanläggning (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction: People with Usher syndrome (USH) have an inherited disorder causing congenital deafness or hearing loss combined with progressive vision loss and, in some cases, balance problems. Previous research has shown that people with USH have poor physical and psychological health. Research has, however, demonstrated that there are in-group health differences that have not yet been explored and that there is a lack of studies on life strategies as well as health in relation to working life.

Aim: The aim was to explore the relationship between work and health in people with USH1 and 2 and to explore the experiences of life strategies in people with USH 2.

Methods: A quantitative and a qualitative explorative design was employed comprising two cross-sectional studies of the relationship between work and health in people with USH2 (n=67) and USH1 (n=47). The third study, of life strategies, comprised focus group interviews with people with USH2a (n=14) analyzed by content analysis. The fourth study explored the lived experiences of working life by interviewing people with USH2 (n=7) using an interpretative phenomenological approach.

Results: Study 1 and 2 demonstrated significant differences in health between working and nonworking people. Nonworking people showed significantly poorer health. In study 3, a variety of strategies to prevent and resolve challenges in life, as well as to comfort oneself was identified. The lived experiences of working life in people with USH2 (study 4) disclosed feelings of satisfaction, striving towards a work life balance. Work also disclosed feelings of limitations and uncertainty about the future.

Conclusion: The results, which are discussed in relation to the Meikirsh model of health, demonstrated a complexity. Individual life strategies, psychological flexibility and environmental aspects, such as social determinants have to be considered to receive a comprehensive picture of the relationship between work and health in people with USH. This thesis provides new insights into the health of people with USH.

    Abstract [en]

Introduction: Persons with deafblindness may have additional physical and psychological health problems. In this study we have focused on health from a work-life perspective in persons with Usher syndrome type 2 (USH2), a disorder with sensorineural hearing loss and retinitis pigmentosa. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between work and disability pension and physical and psychological health in persons with USH2.

Methods: Participants were recruited from the Swedish Usher database. Eighty-four persons (aged 18 to 65 years) received a health-related questionnaire and 67 (36 women and 31 men) agreed to participate. The participants formed two groups (working group, n = 34; disability pension group, n = 33). A Swedish Health on Equal Terms questionnaire comprising questions on psychological and physical health, living conditions, work activity, and social relationships was used. A chi-square test of significance was used with a significance level of p < 0.05.

Results: The two groups did not differ in terms of age, gender, degree of hearing loss, visual acuity, or visual field loss. The working group had statistically significant better health compared to the disability pension group in areas such as being overweight, handling problems, concentration, feeling unhappy, depressive symptoms, and feelings of worthlessness. Suicidal thoughts and attempts were significantly more common in the disability pension group.

Discussion: Persons with USH2 generally reported very poor physical and psychological health, with significant differences between persons who were working and those who were not. This study highlights the need for early rehabilitation, vocational training, and opportunities to access the labor market. Implications for practitioners: It is important that persons with USH2 receive vocational support from an early age and that professionals in the field of rehabilitation always include work activity as a key element of interventions.

    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: Research has demonstrated that persons with Usher syndrome type 1 (USH1) have significantly poorer physical and psychological health compared to a reference group.

PURPOSE: To explore the relation between work, health, social trust, and financial situation in USH1 compared to a reference group.

MATERIAL: Sixty-six persons (18-65 y) from the Swedish Usher database received a questionnaire and 47 were included, 23 working and 24 non-working. The reference group comprised 3,049 working and 198 non-working persons.

METHODS: The Swedish Health on Equal Terms questionnaire was used and statistical analysis with multiple logistic regression was conducted.

RESULTS: The USH1 non-work group had a higher Odds ratio (95% CI) in poor psychological and physical health, social trust, and financial situation compared to the USH1 work group and reference groups. Age, gender, hearing, and vision impairment did not explain the differences. The relation between the USH1 work and non-work groups showed the same pattern as the reference groups, but the magnitude of problems was significantly higher.

CONCLUSIONS: Both disability and unemployment increased the risk of poor health, social trust and financial situation in persons with USH1, but having an employment seemed to counteract the risks related to disability.

    Abstract [en]

Purpose: To explore life strategies in people with Usher syndrome type 2a.

Background: There are no studies on life strategies in people with Usher syndrome. People with deafblindness are often described in terms of poor health and low quality of life, or as being vulnerable. From a clinical point of view, it is of importance to balance this picture, with an increased knowledge of life strategies.

Methods: The study had a qualitative explorative design. Fourteen people aged 20-64 years (4 women, 10 men) with USH2a in Sweden participated in focus group interviews, which were transcribed and analysed by qualitative content analysis.

Results: The content analysis resulted in seven categories; remaining active, using devices, using support, sharing knowledge, appreciating the present, maintaining a positive image and alleviating emotional pain. Two sub-themes: resolve or prevent challenges and comforting oneself was abstracted forming a theme "being at the helm".

Conclusion: The findings show that people with USH2a have a variety of life strategies that can be interpreted as highlighting different aspects of psychological flexibility in a life adjustment process. The study demonstrates that people with USH2a manage in many ways, and metaphorically, by "taking the helm", they strive to actively navigate towards their own chosen values.

Understanding Firm Behavior: The Role of Recruitments and Institutional Reforms2020Doktorsavhandling, sammanläggning (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The topic of this thesis is firm behavior and how it is shaped by institutional changes and firms’ recruitment decisions.

The first essay studies how the recruitment decisions made by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) affect their subsequent productivity development. Previous studies have shown that being able to recruit employees with complementary skills is associated with skill improvement among incumbent personnel, suggesting that new recruits promote productivity through knowledge spillovers. Using matched employer-employee data, we find that recruiting personnel from large multinational firms can be instrumental for the performance of SMEs.

In the second essay, we evaluate the labor market effects of the 2007 Swedish youth payroll reform. This reform generated considerable labor cost savings for firms, related to their pre-reform number of young employees. We study the effects of these savings on firms’ subsequent employment growth and wage development. Our findings suggest that a total of 18,100 jobs were created over the period 2006-2008 and that the savings were partially used to increase the total wages for incumbent employees.

The third essay utilizes the 2007 Swedish youth payroll reform to analyze whether general labor cost reductions enhance labor market opportunities for non-western immigrants. In contrast to targeted and time-limited wage subsidies for immigrants, which have frequently been used in the past, these savings were not tied to a specific group or to a certain time period. A strong and positive link between the amount of firms’ labor cost savings and the employment of first-generation non-western immigrants is found.

The fourth essay evaluates the efficiency of a staff register reform introduced within the Swedish restaurant and hairdresser industries in 2007. The aim of this reform was to prevent firms from deliberately understating their wage payments and, thereby, evading taxes. We estimate the effect of the staff register reform on wages per employee and find wage increases of 2.17-10.2 percent per incumbent employee at restaurant firms during the four years following the introduction of the reform. Through a revenue-cost comparison, we compare the estimated gain in tax revenues to the total costs borne by firms and the tax authority. Our findings imply that the total costs exceed the tax revenues, suggesting that this reform is unlikely to be economically justified.

    Abstract [en]

We examine the link between new employees in leading positions and subsequent productivity in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Managers and professionals are likely to possess important tacit knowledge. They are also in a position to influence the employing firm. Exploiting rich and comprehensive panel data for Sweden in the 2001-2010 period and employing semi-parametric and quasi-experimental estimation techniques, we find that newly recruited professionals have a positive and statistically significant impact on the productivity of the hiring SME. For newly recruited managers there is no general link to the productivity of the hiring SME. We also find that professionals with experience from international firms and enterprise groups contribute the most to total factor productivity. Overall, the findings suggest the importance of mobility of key personnel for productivity-enhancing knowledge spillovers to SMEs.

High-grade spondylolisthesis in young patients: Long-term results of in situ fusion2020Doktorsavhandling, sammanläggning (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this long-term follow-up of 38 of 40 consecutive patients was to evaluate the results of uninstrumented in situ fusion for high-grade isthmic spondylolisthesis three decades after surgery. The mean age at surgery was 14 (range 9-24) years. The first of four studies evaluated clinical outcome, function, work status, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) after in situ fusion in relation to age-matched Swedish population data. The second study evaluated effects on sagittal balance after in situ fusion. The third study evaluated adjacent segment disk degeneration after in situ fusion. The fourth study evaluated self-imageand HRQoL after in situ fusion in relation to healthy controls.

The main findings were that (1) young patients fused in situ for highgrade isthmic spondylolisthesis have long-term HRQoL similar to the general Swedish population and controls matched for age and gender, (2) signs of non-compensated sagittal imbalance were observed only ina few individuals whereas compensated sagittal balance was the norm, (3) there was no correlation between any radiographic sagittal balance parameter and HRQoL outcome, (4) there was only a minor reduction inadjacent segment disk height which had no impact on HRQoL outcome, and (5) the only patient reported outcome measure indicating a detrimental effect at long-term follow-up was self-assessed trunk appearance which was slightly negatively affected.

    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this mixed prospective and retrospective case series was to evaluate the long-term health-related quality of life and physical disability after in situ arthrodesis for high-grade isthmic spondylolisthesis.

METHODS: Thirty-five of forty consecutive patients who had in situ spinal arthrodesis for high-grade isthmic spondylolisthesis at a mean age of fifteen years (range, nine to twenty-five years) completed validated questionnaires (Short Form-36 [SF-36], EuroQol-5 Dimensions [EQ-5D], Zung depression scale, Oswestry disability index [ODI], Million score, and back and leg pain visual analog scale [VAS]) and underwent physical examination twenty-nine years (range, twenty-three to thirty-five years) after surgery. The mean age at the time of follow-up was forty-three years (range, thirty-seven to fifty-one years). In the absence of a formal control group, the scores on the SF-36 and EQ-5D were compared with Swedish normative data. The proportion of patients at work was compared with an age-matched control group derived from official statistics of Sweden. The Million score at the long-term follow-up was compared with the corresponding results at the mid-term follow-up of the same patients at a mean age of twenty-two years.

RESULTS: The scores on the SF-36 and EQ-5D were similar to the scores of the general Swedish population. The mean Zung depression scale score was 30 (range, 20 to 52), the mean ODI score was 10 (range, 0 to 34), the mean back pain VAS score was 13 (range, 0 to 72), and the mean leg pain VAS score was 9 (range, 0 to 60). The Million score averaged 28 (range, 0 to 109) and was slightly worsened compared with the score of 19 (range, 0 to 94) at the mid-term follow-up (p = 0.034). The proportion of patients at work was the same as that for the age-matched general Swedish population.

CONCLUSIONS: Our study shows good outcomes in health-related quality of life, disability, pain, and ability to work at up to twenty-nine years after in situ lumbar spine arthrodesis for high-grade isthmic spondylolisthesis.

    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: This case series of consecutive patients evaluated sagittal balance and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) 3 decades after in situ arthrodesis for high-grade isthmic spondylolisthesis.

METHODS: Global sagittal balance, pelvic parameters, and compensatory mechanisms were evaluated on standing lateral radiographs of the spine and pelvis for 28 of 39 consecutive patients, 28 to 41 years after in situ arthrodesis for high-grade L5 to S1 spondylolisthesis. The mean age at surgery was 14 years (range, 9 to 24 years), and the mean age at the time of follow-up was 48 years (range, 39 to 59 years). A subset of the radiographic parameters was compared with the corresponding data from an 8-year follow-up examination of the same patients. HRQoL was evaluated with the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS)-22r questionnaire.

RESULTS: We found that 3 of the 28 patients had a global sagittal imbalance (T1 spinopelvic inclination of >0°). Signs of compensatory mechanisms, such as reduced thoracic kyphosis and pelvic retroversion, were frequent. There was a significant decrease in sacral slope compared with 8-year follow-up data (p = 0.01). The median SRS-22r subscore was on the same level as Swedish normative data. We found no association between radiographic parameters and SRS-22r outcome.

CONCLUSIONS: Three decades after in situ arthrodesis for high-grade spondylolisthesis, radiographic signs of noncompensated sagittal imbalance were observed in only a few individuals. The patients had normal SRS-22r scores. There was no association between any radiographic parameter and SRS-22r outcome. The findings are relevant in the controversial discussion on whether to perform a reduction procedure to treat high-grade spondylolisthesis.

    STUDY DESIGN: Observational study.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate adjacent segment disk degeneration (ASD) after fusion without attempted reduction at a young age for high-grade isthmic spondylolisthesis. The clinical relevance of ASD remains unclear. Previous studies have shown that spinal fusion is associated with increased ASD but without influence on clinical outcome. Since high-grade spondylolisthesis is a severe kyphotic deformity, one could hypothesize that fusion without attempted reduction in young patients leads to accelerated adjacent segment disk degeneration in adult life.

METHODS: Anterior and posterior disk heights were evaluated on supine radiographs of the spine 8 years and 29 years after fusion without attempted reduction for high-grade spondylolisthesis and also on standing radiographs 8 years and 33 years after surgery. Pelvic parameters were evaluated on standing radiographs obtained 33 years after surgery. Health-related quality of life was evaluated with the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS)-22r questionnaire.

RESULTS: One segment above fusion the anterior disk height significantly decreased on standing radiographs. Two segments above the fusion, the anterior disk height significantly decreased on supine as well as on standing radiographs. The largest reduction was found two segments above the fusion where the disk height was reduced from 33 to 28% of anterior vertebral height between the measurements at mean 8 years and mean 33 years after surgery. There were no statistically significant decreases in posterior disk heights in any measurement. The disk height showed a moderate negative correlation to PT. There was no correlation between disk height reduction and SRS-22r outcome.

CONCLUSIONS: In our long-term follow-up of fusion without attempted reduction for high-grade spondylolisthesis in young patients, we found only a minor but statistically significant reduction in adjacent segment disk height which had no apparent impact on clinical outcome.

    STUDY DESIGN: Observational study.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate self-image after in situ fusion for high-grade isthmic spondylolisthesis.

SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Certain clinical findings such as short trunk or waistline skin folds are often seen in high-grade spondylolisthesis. Since treatment with spinal fusion in situ does not address appearance, self-image and also health-related quality of life might be negatively affected in the short-term as well as the long-term perspective. This observational study evaluated health-related quality of life outcome including self-image three decades after in situ fusion for high-grade isthmic spondylolisthesis in relation to healthy controls.

METHODS: Thirty-eight of 39 consecutive patients, fused in situ for high-grade isthmic spondylolisthesis at a young age, completed the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS)-22r questionnaire 28-41 years after surgery. The results were compared with the results of an age- and gender-matched control group.

RESULTS: We found that the SRS-22r self-image domain scores were statistically significantly lower in patients than in controls whereas the pain and mental health scores were similar in patients and controls. Also, the SRS-22r function domain scores were statistically significantly lower in patients but the difference in means was small. We found no correlation between severity of slip and SRS-22r outcome.

CONCLUSIONS: In situ fusion for high-grade isthmic spondylolisthesis is a safe treatment option in the long term from a function and pain perspective, but the results of our study suggest that self-image is negatively affected long into adult life.

Seeking Asylum - Finding a Home? A qualitative study on asylum seekers' integration in two different housing contexts2020Doktorsavhandling, monografi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The overall aim of this thesis is to contribute to our sociological understanding of integration by exploring how asylum seekers in Sweden make sense of their own position in relation to the society they are living in. Integration is conceptualised as a mutual process, the end goal of which is equal participation and belonging to a given society. Syrian refugees were interviewed on two occasions in order to follow their integration process as they moved from the precariousness as asylum seekers to the relative stability as residents. The thesis also aims to explore what role different housing forms have in shaping their integration process, and the interviews were conducted in two locations: one dominated by Migration Agency housing (ABO) the other by ‘own housing’ (EBO). EBO is often portrayed as an ‘integration problem’ but when such arguments are made, the asylum seeker’s perspective is rarely considered. This study addresses this shortcoming and asks: How do asylum seekers make sense of their integration process? What obstacles and opportunities do they experience in this process? What role does the type of housing, and its context, play in this process?

Using Ager and Strang’s ten core domains of integration as an analytical framework, the study shows how asylum seekers’ access to participation is severely limited, not least because they lack the foundation of formal rights. A residence permit does offer a sense of stability in this respect, but stability in other domains is still elusive. Social connections, employment and housing are central domains where stability in one domain often has to be sacrificed to achieve stability in another.

Viewing these results through the lens of classical sociology, and the concepts ‘community’ and ‘society’, shows how the participants make sense of integration on a more abstract level. Society, defined as a sense of belonging based on contribution (through paid work), was important in both locations. Community, defined as a sense of belonging based on similarity, was emphasised more in the EBO location. However, portraying this as an ‘integration problem’, as is often done in policy, misses the complexity of the situation and the ‘solutions’ presented risk being counterproductive.

Matters of Public Connection: The role of mediated and interpersonal communication in young people's environmental engagement2020Doktorsavhandling, sammanläggning (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

What lies at the heart of environmental identity is the recognition of our interconnection with other people, living and not yet born, as well as nonhumans. To develop this sense of belonging, one needs to sustain public connection—a basic orientation to the public world where matters of shared concern are addressed. This connection is best sustained through communication— interpersonal and through media. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the role that public connection, interpersonal and mediated, plays in young people’s everyday environmental engagement. This dissertation addresses the task by focusing on how this role varies among adolescents of different ages, genders, and existing environmental attitudes and how it changes over time. Drawing on Bruno Latour’s notion of “matters of concern” and Steven Vogel’s environmental philosophy, this inquiry challenges the common understanding of environmental awareness as an “extremely scientific view of the world,” expands the role of the media and interpersonal communication beyond the dissemination of scientific and ecological information and its effects on people, and taps into communication’s potential to sustain public connection. To provide a more integrated and dynamic perspective on adolescents’ communication flows, I employ longitudinal quantitative data and draw heavily on a toolbox of person-oriented methods. Methodologically, the main focus lies in identifying types of young people who function in a similar way and comparing how the relationship between public connection and environmental engagement unfolds for these different types of individuals. This dissertation consists of three empirical studies. The findings suggest that the more strongly connected to the public world young people are, the more engaged they are with environmental issues. Both interpersonal discussions and news media use assist in strengthening engaged adolescents’ belief that their contribution matters for tackling climate change. However, environmentally aware youth may project their own beliefs onto other people rather than being influenced by others’ beliefs. Disengaged youth do not sustain public connection, whether through conversation or through media. The role of mediated public connection varies among adolescents. Media may not be the most important channel for environmentally engaged youth to sustain their orientation to the public realm. This is indicated by the deep gender divide, in which girls are more concerned about the environment but consume significantly less news than boys. While news consumption does not seem to contribute to environmental disengagement, its relevance to pro-environmental practices weakens as teenagers mature. Early adolescence may be a critical window of opportunity to instill values of connectivity and form everyday habits that can help us achieve a more sustainable future.

    Abstract [en]

Research shows that news consumption plays a positive role in youths' environmental engagement. This article examines if this also holds true for sceptics by comparing Swedish climate change sceptics with non-sceptical youngsters in their early and late adolescence. We conceptualise news consumption as foci of public connection and orientation rather than a source of environmental information. The results show that in their early teens, heavy news consumers among both sceptics and non-sceptics are indeed more engaged with environmental issues than their less news-oriented peers. However, in late adolescence, sceptics among news consumers show very little environmental engagement.

    Abstract [en]

Reflexivity has long become part of qualitative researcher’s arsenal for validity and credibility claims. However, very few quantitative researchers take the time to look back at their research process and ponder over the cost of deriving knowledge from statistical models – what has been omitted, polished, ignored or not taken into account. In this chapter I will try to bring reflexivity into my own quantitative research of young people’s environmental behavior by reflecting over what knowledge I have produced so far and why. Having worked with five waves of longitudinal data for two different age cohorts, I lived through several ‘existential’ crises failing to comprehend the stories that the data was telling me and failing to ‘impose’ my theoretical stories on it. It has challenged me to unravel conventions and granted assumptions of media studies as a discipline, reflect upon data’s temporal and spatial components, the subjective position of the researcher, the limits and the meaningfulness of generalizations, and the role of interpretations in statistical analysis. My personal research journey serves as a helpful background for a discussion of difficulties working with longitudinal quantitative data.

Heder och samhälle: Det hedersrelaterade våldets och förtryckets uttryck och samhällets utmaningar2019Rapport (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [sv]

Educational interventions for sustainable innovation in small and medium sized enterprises2020Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production, ISSN 0959-6526, E-ISSN 1879-1786, Vol. 243, artikel-id 118554Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Sustainability innovation research suggests that when the managers of small and medium-sized enterprises(SMEs) perceive sustainability as strategic, they undertake sustainable innovation. Educationalinterventions are, in turn, suggested to foster such views among these managers. But in the interactionbetween educators and managers, power matters for how knowledge is conveyed and educational interventionsare understudied, especially when they are university-led. This article examines how actors’power affects the translation of knowledge between educators and SME managers. A conceptualframework combining translation and power-dependency theory is introduced and applied to the casestudy of a University-led competence development program offered to construction company managersin Sweden. The analysis reveals how imbalanced dependencies and power within interactions accumulatedover time and came to interfere with the program’s learning objectives. The study contributespractically by suggesting how mutual goals, time management, and relationship building can create abetter context for educator-SME interactions and SME sustainability. The scientific contribution lies inintroducing a new perspective on educational interventions for SMEs and providing a conceptualframework for future studies thereof.

    Abstract [en]

This article discusses the function of Vincenzo Albrici and Charles II's Italian ensemble at the English Restoration court. The article cites newly discovered archival evidence to suggest that Albrici arrived at the English court in 1664 to become the leader of an exclusive ensemble performing Italian chamber music. The employment of the Italian ensemble imitated Mazarin's patronage of Italian music at the French court, arguably to rehabilitate the recently restored Stuart dynasty in the eyes of Continental courts. The article suggests that the ensemble performed chamber music privately at court, and also occasionally appeared in the queen's Catholic chapel after 1666. The recruitment of Albrici and the Italian ensemble shows that the English court participated in Continental musical fashions after the Restoration, and illustrates the complex webs of cultural exchange in mid-seventeenth-century Europe.

    Abstract [en]

This chapter describes the methodological processes involved in the project Raising Awareness using Virtual Experiencing (RAVE), funded by the Swedish Research council. The aim of the project is to develop experiential pedagogic approaches aimed at raising sociolinguistic language awareness about stereotyping and language. A key feature of the method consists of updated matched-guise techniques, whereby the same recording is digitally manipulated to alter the voice quality of a speaker to sound “male” or “female”, for example. These versions of the recording are then used as input stimuli for a response phase aimed at illustrating how we as listeners react differently to a person, and what is being said, depending on the perceived identity of the speaker. This chapter then illustrates how results are used as a starting point for discussions with respondents (student groups) on issues related to stereotyping and language, with the aim to raise awareness and self-reflection.

    Abstract [en]

We present a system for accurate 3D instance-aware semantic reconstruction and 6D pose estimation, using an RGB-D camera. Our framework couples convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and a state-of-the-art dense Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM) system, ElasticFusion, to achieve both high-quality semantic reconstruction as well as robust 6D pose estimation for relevant objects. The method presented in this paper extends a high-quality instance-aware semantic 3D Mapping system from previous work [1] by adding a 6D object pose estimator. While the main trend in CNN-based 6D pose estimation has been to infer object's position and orientation from single views of the scene, our approach explores performing pose estimation from multiple viewpoints, under the conjecture that combining multiple predictions can improve the robustness of an object detection system. The resulting system is capable of producing high-quality object-aware semantic reconstructions of room-sized environments, as well as accurately detecting objects and their 6D poses. The developed method has been verified through experimental validation on the YCB-Video dataset and a newly collected warehouse object dataset. Experimental results confirmed that the proposed system achieves improvements over state-of-the-art methods in terms of surface reconstruction and object pose prediction. Our code and video are available at https://sites.google.com/view/object-rpe.

    Abstract [en]

The multiple-choice video game Life is Strange was described by its French developers as a metaphor for the inner conflicts experienced by a teenager in trying to become an adult. In psychological work with adolescents, there is a stark similarity between what they experience and some concepts of existentialist philosophy. Sartre’s script for the movie Les Jeux Sont Faits (literally “games are made”) uses the same narrative strategy as Life is Strange—the capacity for the main characters to travel back in time to change their own existence—in order to stimulate philosophical, ethical, and political thinking and also to effectively simulate existential “limit situations.” This article is a dialogue between Sartre’s views and Life is Strange in order to examine to what extent questions such as what is freedom? what is choice? what is autonomy and responsibility? can be interpreted anew in hybrid digital–human—“anthrobotic”—environments.

Big Data, Small Concepts: Histosophy as an Approach to Longue-Durée History2019Ingår i: Global l Intellectual History, ISSN 2380-1883Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this essay, we sketch out a method, histosophy, which makes possible the study of intellectual history and conceptual genealogy both in depth and over long periods of time. Histosophy uses digital tools to survey ‘large issues within small compasses.’ A genealogy of signifiers, it considers metonymic parts of a problem in order to contribute precisely and coherently to a larger perspective. We outline the theoretical contours of our approach. We exemplify how it works in practice by looking at the signifier ‘esprit de corps’, the study of which is presented in detail in the histosophical book The Genealogy of Esprit de Corps(Edinburgh University Press, 2019). The phrase ‘esprit de corps’ has been widely used since the eighteenth century in different discourses (political, military, sociological, etc.), but it is sufficiently limited that its genealogy can be traced across centuries and nations with precision, coherence, clarity, and with the help of automated search engines. By contrast, related but bigger concepts like freedom, individualism or solidarity are part of dozens of disparate and fuzzy discourses, so often uttered that the analysis of modern uses is problematic. The histosophical methodology is applicable in six discrete stages, here outlined.

    Abstract [sv]

Gender equality in Nordic academia: advances and challenges2019Ingår i: RODNA RAVNOPRAVNOST U VISOKOM OBRAZOVANJU: Koncepti, prakse i izazovi / [ed] Dragica Vujadinović and Zorana Antonijević, Novi Sad, Serbia: Akademska knjiga , 2019, s. 63-73Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The five Nordic countries – Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden – are considered high achievers in global comparisons of overall gender equality of society (World Economic Forum, 2017a). Political will in the region to advance gender equality in academia is high. Gender equality promotion in higher education, academia, and research has been on the national policy agendas for four decades, since the late 1970s and early 1980s, through various national level interventions and measures, especially so in Finland, Norway, and Sweden. Gender equality is addressed in the university legislation in Norway and Sweden, and in Finland the Gender Equality and Anti-Discrimination legislation especially gives educational institutions a duty to promote equality and prevent discrimination. Universities in Finland, Norway, and Sweden have for decades been legally obliged to engage in equality planning. These three countries also show the highest proportion of women on scientific boards in the European Union, approaching gender parity, and the highest proportion of women among university Vice-Chancellors in the EU. Despite this, unequal gendered structures in academic careers and gender segregation of disciplinary fields prevail. Taking the proportion of women among full professors as one indicator of gender equality in academia, the Nordic region does not excel in a European comparison, neither in the share of women in the professoriate, nor the pace of diminishing the gender gap among professors. This article interrogates the Nordic paradox of high overall gender equality in society, political will, and active policy regulation to advance gender equality in academia and science, on the one hand, and the unequal gendered structures in academic careers and inequalities in resource allocation, including research funding, on the other. Some differences and similarities between the five Nordic countries will be highlighted and discussed, along with historical developments, policy landscapes, and continuing resistances to advancement of gender equality, both within and outside academia.

Ultraviolet-B radiation exposure lowers the antioxidant capacity in the Arabidopsis thaliana pdx1.3-1 mutant and leads to glucosinolate biosynthesis alteration in both wild type and mutant2020Ingår i: Photochemical and Photobiological Sciences, ISSN 1474-905X, E-ISSN 1474-9092, Vol. 19, nr 2, s. 217-228Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Pyridoxine (vitamin B6) and its vitamers are used by living organisms both as enzymatic cofactors and as antioxidants. We used Arabidopsis pyridoxine biosynthesis mutant pdx1.3-1to study involvement of the PLP-synthase main polypeptide PDX1 in plant responses to ultraviolet radiation of two different qualities, one containing primarily UV-A (315-400 nm), the other containing both UV-A and UV-B (280-315 nm). The antioxidant capacity and the flavonoid and glucosinolate (GS) profiles were examined. As indicator of stress, Fv/Fmof photosystem II reaction centers was used. In pdx1.3-1, UV-A+B exposure led to a significant 5% decrease in Fv/Fmon the last day (day 15), indicating mild stress at this time point. Antioxidant capacity of Col-0 wildtype increased significantly (50-73%) after 1 and 3 days of UV-A+B. Instead, in pdx1.3-1, the antioxidant capacity significantly decreased by 44-52% over the same time period, proving the importance of a full complement of functional PDX1genes for detoxification of reactive oxygen species. There were no significant changes in flavonoid glycoside profile under any light condition. However, the GS profile was significantly altered, both with respect to Arabidopsis accession and exposure to UV. The difference in flavonoid and GS profiles reflect that the GS biosynthesis pathway contains at least one pyridoxine-dependent enzyme, whereas no such enzyme is used in flavonoid biosynthesis. Also, there was strong correlation between the antioxidant capacity and the content of some GS compounds. Our results show that vitamin B6vitamers, functioning both as antioxidants and co-factors, are of importance for physiological fitness of plants.

    Abstract [en]

This article explores learning during game-play of a snowboarding video game intrigued by questions raised in the wake of the increasing mediatisation and digitisation of learning. Correspondingly, we answer to calls for more suitable metaphors for learning to cater for the entangled learning processes that changes related to the increase of digital media may infer. Using a short term sensory ethnography approach, we elaborate on the idea of multisensory emplaced learning and propose an organic metaphor – mycorrhiza – to both methodology and learning. Mycorrhiza refers to a symbiotic relationship between fungi and roots of plants in its environment where fungi are the visible effects of the mycorrhiza. The metaphor provides a way to start to unpack sensory, visual and embodied aspects of learning in the complexities of the digital age. By elaborating on the mycorrhizaic concepts fungus, soil, growth, mycelia and symbiosis we show three interrelated ways of moving through this game: (i) a social and cultural route, (ii) a competitive route, and (iii) an experiential route. With help of the metaphor we discern the symbiotic relations between what appeared in our empirical material as visual and other human and non-human aspects of emplacement.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This research seeks to increase the knowledge about the role of language in the teaching of human rights. The specific interest is to examine how language use extends and specifies the human rights learning situation. Drawing on John Dewey’s arguments for two main constituents of an educative language use—the extension of vocabulary and rendering it more precise, observational data from ongoing human rights teaching in six Swedish classes in Years 2–3, 5 and 8 are analysed. The findings show six focal points towards which the language use in the teaching extends the students’ vocabulary and generic understanding of human rights, and three objectives for an increased preciseness in students’ language. The paper highlights differences between the age groups concerning the focal points and precision objectives, and points out potentials and strengths in the observed teaching, as well as aspects of problematic character to consider further.

    Abstract [en]

Warehouse logistics is a rapidly growing market for robots. However, one key procedure that has not received much attention is the unwrapping of pallets to prepare them for objects picking. In fact, to prevent the goods from falling and to protect them, pallets are normally wrapped in plastic when they enter the warehouse. Currently, unwrapping is mainly performed by human operators, due to the complexity of its planning and control phases. Autonomous solutions exist, but usually they are designed for specific situations, require a large footprint and are characterized by low flexibility. In this work, we propose a novel integrated robotic solution for autonomous plastic film removal relying on an impedance-controlled robot. The main contribution is twofold: on one side, a strategy to plan Cartesian impedance and trajectory to execute the cut without damaging the goods is discussed; on the other side, we present a cutting device that we designed for this purpose. The proposed solution presents the characteristics of high versatility and the need for a reduced footprint, due to the adopted technologies and the integration with a mobile base. Experimental results are shown to validate the proposed approach.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to explore how students in a higher education context handle the writing of their final essay. Applying a sociomaterial approach, the study offers comprehensive case studies of students’ writing processes. The thesis attempts to show how student writers handle writing challenges through different technologies and at different places. It does so by implementing the Mobile Technologies Process Logs (MTPL)-method, wherein participating students take an active role to create and gather data on their own writing processes.

The results show that some students’ textual work could be described in terms of being comprehensive, and hence handled through varied writing technologies at various writing places. These students write a lot of texts to move the writing process forward. Other writers take a more product-oriented view in their writing, and hence write through fewer technologies, at a few places, and with a wish to finish their final text product directly. Many of the students make explicit how they process the literature through writing texts. The knowledge production, the analysis, which is central to academic writing, seems however more implicit and difficult for the students to handle, specifically if having a product oriented view on writing. The results also show how students mobilize different textual actions to meet challenges that writing an (digital) essay implies. This work is clearly emplaced ,at diverse or at more homogenous writing places.

It is significant to make textual strategies as well as the functions of writing technologies and place visible to all students. It seems vital at times where higher education, as well as the students entering this institution, are put in front of a raft of (new) challenges. At the same time as the idea of the bad student writer is prevailing, higher education institutions seem not to teach how an academic writing process could be managed in successful ways. This thesis contributes to this field of inquiry with results on how students’ writing processes can be characterized.

    Global governance for climate justice: A cross-national analysis of CO2 emissions2019Ingår i: Global Transitions, ISSN 2589-7918, Vol. 1, s. 190-199Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Sustainable energy transitions are key to achieving climate justice for all. Carbon dioxide emissions’(CO2) unequal distribution globally is one of the many issues preventing climate justice. Efforts to reduceglobal CO2impacts are vital for environmental justice efforts and a future free from climate change is-sues. Researchers have long been interested in how the rise of global governance initiatives, such asmultilateral treaties, impact environmental outcomes across the world. However, little is known abouthow global governance concerning energy usage and technologies impacts CO2emissions across theworld. Using two-wayfixed effects regression analysis from 1996 to 2011, we test how 24 multilateralenvironmental treaties with an energy focus impact CO2emissions per capita, CO2emissions as a per-centage of gross domestic product, and total CO2emissions for 162 nations. The multilateral energytreaties were collected from Ecolex. This analysis assesses how the legitimacy of global contracts mayimpact actual decreases in CO2emissions, resulting in climate justice outcomes. Additionally, thisanalysis considers how factors of institutional state governance, including control of corruption, rule oflaw, political stability, government effectiveness, and regulatory quality moderate the impact of multi-lateral energy environmental treaties and CO2emissions. Wefind that stocks of environmental treatyratification are associated with decreases in all three types of CO2emissions. Renewable energy con-sumption, GDP per capita, and urban and total population are associated with increased CO2 emissions. We alsofind some support for the idea that treaties are associated with larger decreases in emissions innations with higher levels of state governance. Understanding how state accountability, transparency, and legitimacy factor into the effectiveness of multilateral environmental treaties on reducing CO2emissions is essential to combating climate change issues.
