Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

One of the key issues in the contemporary debate on education is student alienation from school, which can be linked to, among other issues, a discrepancy between national curricula and student migration experiences in the multicultural classroom. In order to create inclusive environments accommodating the diversity represented in the classroom and to help teachers develop tools strengthening "intercultural competency", this contribution introduces a project-oriented approach to teaching history based on the concept of narrative identity. The aim is to introduce new deliberative didactic methods to address migration in teaching history at school. Consequently, the contribution reflects the concept of narrative identity and its added value for classes on migration history. It also reflects on some crucial ethical aspects linked to the deliberative teaching on migration and maps the concept of normalization of migration at schools. As an example of good deliberative practice, the chapter presents a practical tool to normalize migration in teaching history classes by implementing the exercise "My Migration Story".

Abstract [en]

The focus of this contribution lies in the significance of cultural heritage for various institutional and state actors, and its connection to the well-being of democracy within the country. It is widely acknowledged that Poland, between World War II and 1989, was within the sphere of influence of the Soviet state. Consequently, the teaching and interpretation of history in schools had to adhere to guidelines established by the Ministry of Education. However, the fact that the state retains authority over curricula and syllabi, with specific state institutions responsible for designing the educational program, is generally accepted, and there is a general consensus that in liberal democracies, someone must oversee the school curriculum. At the same time, it is also widely recognized that state institutions and their work on educational policies, as well as the content of education, can be influenced by present political interests. Therefore, the more intriguing question arises: at what point does state influence over the public’s understanding of the country’s history become so significant that it can be considered as state intervention in the national cultural heritage? In other words, when does history in the public sphere become uncomfortably unfamiliar and incomprehensible to generations who have personally experienced the past?

Abstract [de]

Abstract [en]

Humanitarian aid to children of war. The organization of aid-related activities in the Örebro region 1919-1922

The Swedish term krigsbarn, meaning children of war is a term used for the first time to describe children from countries affected by war 1914-1918; children, who were provided aid in the neutral countries. Sweden was one of the countries who aided a group of about 26 000 children during the years 1922-1924 and the coordination of this work was provided by the Swedish Red Cross.

This contribution will give an insight into the process of implementation of the aid-related activities at the local level and map the mobilization of local authorities in the Örebro region. Moreover, it will reflect on the character of this aid by embodying the voices of these children, their families, and the individuals who helped them.

The presentation is based on the collection called Red Cross Children of War stored at the Archival Center in Örebro.

Abstract [en]

The Polish Source Institute (PIŹ) in Lund in southern Sweden collected over 500 testimonies from Polish survivors in Sweden. The study analyses the work of the archive’s founder Zygmunt Łakociński and examines what role the Holocaust played in this documentation project. The author shows that the Polish national experience was the focal point of this collection. However, the institute also created a small Jewish section for interviews with Polish-Jewish survivors in Sweden. As the Jewish witnesses describe, Jewish life in Poland before the war was, despite widely spread antisemitism, strongly flourishing, and Polish-Jewish relations were deeply entangled. The complexity of these relations makes it impossible to view Polish history of war-suffering without considering the war-suffering of Polish Jews.
