Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to show that the conception of autonomy as second-order capacity, i.e. the capacity to reflect on and change our personal motivational structures, such as preferences and desires, should be of particular interest to the scholarly debate on empowerment.

Abstract [en]

In this paper it is argued that the mechanistic framework allows only a very limited understanding of organizational rationality and that the concept of organizational rationality needs serious reconsideration, based on the assumption that theoretical understanding and articulation are the corner-stones of rationality.

I den här boken diskuteras grundläggande frågor för organiationsteorin som Vad är rationalitet? och Vad utmärker en rationell organisation? Ambitionen är att artikulera ett förhållningssätt till organisationsrationalitet som bygger på insikten att rationalitet ytterst har sin grund i människans förmåga att tänka och resonera. En rationell och modern organisation måste ge utrymme för denna förmåga hos de anställda. Det artikulerade förhållningssättet sätts i samband med den idéhistoriskt viktiga strömning som kallas upplysningen, dess förnuftstro och den rationalisering som samhället genomgått i dess efterföljd. Synsättet är uttalat rationalistiskt men också starkt kritiskt till den instrumentella rationalitetssyn som präglar det moderna samhället och dess organisationer. Diskussionen om rationalitetens grunder och den instrumentella rationalitetens främsta utmaningar inom organisations- och managementområdet följs av en undersökning av rationalitetssynen i några populära managementböcker, nära förknippade med organisationsrecept som BPR, lärande organisationer och Corporate Religion.
