Abstract [en]

When firms undertake investment appraisal they are often based on either the company's discounting rate or how long the pay off time is. These methods do not take into account the external influences that may arise in connection with an investment.

We intend to explain how an investment may affect a company's network links and how the company’s network could affect the investment appraisal. We show how companies can seize opportunities and problems that may arise in connection with an investment. We also provide answers to how a relationship of dependency between the investing company and another actor in the network affects the investment appraisal.

We started from the existing network theory that is related to investment decisions. Through a firm that faces an investment decision, we have been able to obtain empirical evidence. It has been through a semi-structured interview conducted with the company's CEO.

We have found that companies through an investment may affect their network ties by reaching higher technical integration with their customers through product standardization. An investment could potentially open up new segments and give new customers in the network. Nevertheless, an actor in the network can indirectly affect investment appraisal by applying pressure. Dependency ratio in the network can lead to consequences that affect the relationship positively and negatively at the same time. We have also shown that different financing of the investment gives different impacts on the network.
