Abstract [en]

Criminality is today a major social problem. Many criminals begin their criminal careers during adolescence, often caused by a difficult childhood and a quest for identity. There are many researches about why some youths tend to become criminals, but few studies show criminals experiences and thoughts about crime and how they got there. Therefore we have chosen to refer to this subject. Our purpose of this study is to investigate former criminals experiences and thoughts about why they got involved in crime. In our interpretive framework, we chose to involve different risk factors and symbolic interactionism as a theory to explain respondents' behavior. The result, which describes the interviewers’ experiences on why they turned to crime, is compared to whether they are consistent with previous research and with our own understanding. Our study shows that all respondents have had problematic upbringing conditions where risk factors such as abuse, domestic violence, separation, loss and alienation have been relevant.
