Prison guards’ attitudes towards prisoners : A comparative study between female and male prison guards (engelsk)
Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to compare female and male prison guards’ attitudes towards prisoners in two similar prisons in Sweden. We have chosen a quantitative research method for our study, and it is based on an English pilot study done by researchers at the University of Cambridge. After some adjustments of their survey questionnaire, to make it more suitable for Swedish conditions, we only used the parts that were in line with the purpose of our study. Our result reveals that female and male prison guards seem to have different attitudes towards prisoners. Further more, we found certain patterns with the statements that had a significant connection with gender. This pattern overall involved a milder attitude towards the prisoners, whereas our study shows that the female prison guards were more likely to agree with these statements. We did not find any significant connection between those statements that seem to involve a harder attitude towards the prisoners and their situation with the variable gender. Research shows that male prison guards were more likely to be exposed to threats, violence and harassment. Therefore is one conclusion of our result that this itself could lead to different attitudes towards prisoners. But based on a gender perspective we could assume that the attitude towards prisoners has roots in the identity that comes with a certain gender, and how this itself brings “typical” male and female behaviours to the working place. Behaviours that further more will form the fundamental ways of treatment within both the prison guards and the prisoners, and whereas the treatment will affect the necessary conditions to what kind of attitudes the male and female prison guards will have towards the prisoners.
