Abstract [en]

This essay is about investigating the aesthetic violence in the R-rated movies Terminator (1984), RoboCop (1987), Total Recall (1990) and the difference of the PG-13-rated remakes of the movies. The study will examine how the R-rated and the PG-13-rated movies differed in aesthetic violence. The study is based in David Bordwell´s poetics of cinema and was used as a method to see how the representation of the violence was perceived and described in the different movies. The purpose of this essay is about investigating how the aesthetic violence differs in the R-rated movies against the PG-13-rated movies.

The result of the essay was that the R-rated movies contained a lot more of bloodshed and bloody violence in the scenes. Another result was that the R-rated movies contained more graphic and visually violence than the PG-13-rated remakes did. Unless the scenes in the movie contained machines or robotic characters, then the violence was just as graphic and visually violent staged as the R-rated movies itself. Other results regarding the PG-13-rated movies was that it showed a lot more characters getting killed in the scenes, where it can contribute to make the viewer to become desensitized to violence. The aesthetic violence seems to change over time due to changed representation and function of the violence, even though more researches in this subject is needed to ensure this result.
