Abstract

Title: Good caring - easier said than done

An interview study with nursing home staff

Authors: Sara Hollertz and Jasmina Lelic

The conception of caring and the importance of caring can be studied from different perspectives. The purpose of our study is to study signs of the theory of gerotranscendence from caregivers description of caring of elderly at a nursing home.

To be able to answer the purpose and to see what good caring is we have raised questions:

1. What aspects do the staff think are important in caring of elderly?

2. Are there any obstacles that prevent good caring?

To be able to reach the purpose we took part of two focus group interviews that included staff from a nursing home situated in a smaller town in Sweden. The theoretical frame for this study stems from the theory of gerotranscendense. This theory is different from other gerontology theories because it questions other theories with a different view on ageing (Tornstam 2005a). We analyse the result by using earlier research in general and Barbro Wadenstens concrete guidelines for caregivers in particular. These guidelines are developed from the theory of gerotranscendence. Finally we discuss our results in the discussion there we answer the studies purpose with help from the questions. We transcribed the material verbatim and got forty pages that we worked with in this study.

Forum Äldre in Örebro collected the material that we have been using in this study. Focus group interviews were conducted during fall of 2005, where twenty-four staff participated in three focus groups. In our study we took part of two focus group interviews whit thirteen individuals. The two groups consisted of eight and five caregivers in each group. The original purpose with the focus groups was to investigate what staff thought was important in care of elderly and then in the long run implement Barbro Wadenstens concrete guidelines for staffs practical care work.

Our study show that the caregivers have an unconscious fundamental view towards the theory of gerotranscendence. Furthermore the study shows that there are other aspects in caring of the caretakers as importance of relation in everyday carework and ethical aspects. But, we could also see that there are obstacles for caring as stress, work conditions, leadership, processes between caregivers and caretakers and their family and processes between caregivers as a group.

Furthermore our study shows that the right conditions are required if staff should be able to work from a different and new attitude in everyday care work, which is the purpose with the original study.
