The Struggle as Pop: Authenticity and Nostalgia in Post-Apartheid Music

Abstract [en]

The struggle against apartheid had a soundtrack. This assertion is neither new nor particularly controversial. The focus of this presentation is on the role played by nostalgia in post-apartheid music, and particularly on how post-apartheid pop nostalgically harks back to struggle-era music. As is shown through a number of examples, contemporary South African pop artists draw on music and fashion from the struggle era to stake a claim to authenticity.
