Vem att vara, eller vem att inte vara?: En studie om ungdomars identitetskonstruktioner på Facebook och Instagram

The purpose of this study is to examine how Facebook and Instagram, as arenas in social media, affect adolescents’ identity constructions. Based on a qualitative approach the study is constructed by interviews with sixteen adolescents, divided into five focus groups. With the generated data of the study these following questions could be answered:
• How do adolescents describe the interaction on the arenas in relation to everyday face to face interactions?
• How do adolescents perceive their own identity in relation to the presentations and pictures that other individuals present on Facebook and Instagram?
• How to adolescents reflect around self- presentations in these media?
The result shows that the arenas offer the respondents a large number of identity claims to relate to. Some people experience identity claims as inspirational when shaping their own identity. Other feel that they cannot live up to the demands that the arenas put on them. The structural and functional conditions of the arenas create an interactive environment, where the respondents feel called upon to constantly present and observe symbols. The respondents also experience a cultural norm that describes what a profile should look like.
