Abstract [en]

This study aims to find out how women and men are portrayed in the swedish fitness magazines Shape Up and Fitness for Men, whose target groups are the respective sex. To do so a semiotic analysis has been used in which image and text are analysed to see how they influence eachother and what connotations they open up for. Through this analysis questions about what body ideals are presented and how these bodies are supposed to be obtained are answered. The results show that the analysed magazines portray the sexes in a highly stereotypical way, with a few smaller exeptions. Women are presented with a thin ideal whereas men are presented with a muscular body as the ideal.
