Abstract [en]

Västra Mark Hospital in Örebro was one of many mental institutions in Sweden until the mid eighties. Västra Mark Hospital apprehended women who in different ways were considered to deviate from the rest of the society. This study aims to examine how the women were constructed in the psychiatric charts with focus on how the women are described by Beverley Skeggs theory of a respectable femininity. Furthermore the study aims to examine how the women  describe  themselves as inmates. This study is based on psychiatric charts and letters that was written to the doctor at the hospital. The key questions in this study is focus on how the women and the respectable femininity are produced in the charts, and how the women describe themselves as inmates in letters to the doctor. Previous research on mental institutions, has revealed that social class was an important factor of how the female patients were described as deviant and sick in the psychiatric charts. Furthermore, the female patients’ sexuality was a main focus in the depiction of the inmates. This qualitative study shows that the depiction of respectable femininity in the charts may have had significance for the women's discharge from the institution. The study also shows  that the women's descriptions of themselves in the letters gave them space to negotiate and obtain redress in different ways.
