In this essay, we investigate the use of computer games in teaching. The purpose of this essay is to discuss the previous research about the role of computer games in the students' English language development. Through the literary review we found that today's Swedish students meet English at a much earlier age than the previous generation. One of the most common media where students meet the English language is in computer games. The results of the review show that computer games require that the player communicates English with other players. This allows players that does not have English as a first language to develop their literacy skills and vocabulary. We also found that motivation is influenced by computer games: it can create an environment where students feel safe and where they are not afraid to experiment with language. Computer games can also help to create a link between school activities and the students free time. We found that there is no doubt that computer games affect English learning.
