Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay, and this qualitative text analysis, is to analyze textbooks from the Swedish subject ”Gymnastik med lek och idrott” (Gymnastics including games and sports) written between 1920–1956. The textbooks are analyzed with a gender perspective, by using Yvonne Hirdman’s theory about male norms. The hypothesis we based our’ analyze on is that: the man or boy is presented as the normative by the textbooks. To test our hypothesis we focused on analyzing gender roles as norms, values and ideals. Our ambition was to connect results of contemporary societies with different gender roles. We executed two separate analyzes; the first is conducted by Sara Grundel and specified to textbooks from 1920–1926 and the other is conducted by Sofia Gustafsson and specified to textbooks from 1946–1956. The conclusion of the results, from both analyses, demonstrates how the textbooks generally present men as the normative. In addition, most of the textbooks’ task descriptions are written in different ways, depending on the sex it addresses. It becomes clear in our research that it is a clear separation of men and women in most cases.
