The aim of this study is to examine Aftonbladet’s reporting during the European Football Championship in France 2016. The study is accomplished with a critical discourse analysis. The analysis contains eight articles that report on the violent events that took place between different supporters’ groups. We assess what each different text exactly describes and how the reports are constructed by the writers. When analysing each scenario, we identify the various discourses used by the respective writer and assess how the supporters are presented. In order to reach a result we use Fairclough’s three dimensional model within CDA. Our findings demonstrate that Aftonbladet’s reporting widely condemns the behaviour of supporters’ groups and that supporters are often strongly connected with a negative discourse within the texts. At the same time rulers in society are allowed to condemn the incidents. Our findings also reveal that certain inflammatory word choices within the reports contribute to a more extreme portrait of the events that occurred.
