Abstract [en]

Our purpose in this study is to get a deeper understanding to how female temps working in health care experience their employment type in the increasingly flexible working life where it becomes harder to draw a line between work and leisure. Our purpose with our study is therefore also to gain insight to how female temps working in health care experience the balancing-act between working life and private life and how they handle this balancing-act. Previous research that we have used shows that a temporary employment holds a certain negative effect on the individual. The theories we have chosen in our study are: demand-control model, Sense of Coherence and Work life balance. We conducted a qualitative study with semi-structured interviews with four females who are in their twenties. All the womens professions was to care for elderly. The results we received was analysed along the theoretical frame of reference that we had chosen. What emerged was that the women looked at their employment type relatively positive. What determines how they experience their employment type is their life situation as well as whether they have a booking system that facilitates the booking of their work shifts. With life situation, we mean the situation the individual is in at the moment. Our respondent’s life situations differed: one studied as main occupation, one had a family, one lived at home and another saved money for a trip. These life situations all affected the respondents on how they experienced their employment type. What also emerged was that all the women claimed lack of control over their work assignments and this can lead to future illness.
