Abstract [en]

Gender equality is frequently discussed in society. Research show that increased equality and gender equality favors organizations overall results. The Swedish government has given all state institutions of higher education directions for creating new policies concerning gender equality integration. Previous research on gender equality work consists of what kind of resistance and strategies the gender equality worker may use and that Sweden is not as equal as believed regarding gender equality within the academic world. This study investigates how resistance against work on gender equality and how the gender equality worker within state institutions of higher education handle that resistance. The theories being used are theories about organizational culture, sensemaking and theories about resistance and strategies against them. This study which is based upon qualitative, semi-structured interviews shows that resistance may show itself in a manner of different ways, which the gender equality worker may respond to with various strategies. The strategies include informing and increasing knowledge, initiative towards the integration of gender equality work within the organizations structure, or referring to laws, regulations and facts.
