Comparing locally measured artery pressure to calculated aortic pressure obtained from SphygmoCor

Abstract [en]

Hypertension is a risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. In 2014 a cross-sectional Lifestyle, Biomarker and Arteriosclerosis (LBA) study was conducted in Örebro. In the study, arterial stiffness was partly estimated through calculated aortic pressure based on radial measurements with SphygmoCor. The SphygmoCor offered calculated aortic pressure based on carotid measurements. The aim of this sub-study was to compare calculated aortic pressure based on radial and carotid measurements. Carotid pressure was also measured in this study. However the function to calculate aortic pressure based on carotid measurements had no underlying algorithm and was simply a repetition and was excluded from study. In conclusion, the offered function to calculated aortic pressure based on carotid measurement should not be used and SphygmoCor should not offer this function. The mean, diastolic and systolic pressure from calculated aortic pressure based on radial measurement and measured carotid pressure matched well the pressure dynamics in the arterial tree.
