Abstract [en]

The possibilities of conducting background checks on candidates involved in a recruitment process have increased alongside the increasing presence of social media in society. Social media is uncensored, with that recruiters have the opportunity to find information not included within a traditional recruitment process. The study aims to study experiences recruiters meet and how their attitude towards social media are while using it for work related assignments. Previous research has shown an increased usage of internet and social media in collaboration with traditional recruitment work. Previous research also suggests that there are still vast research needed to identify new tools and to develop the process of recruitment.Recruiters attitude towards social media and their use of the former is researched and interpreted through the following sociological theories; panopticon and sensemaking. These theories are amplified through statements of the recruiters in qualitative semi-structured interviews conducted in a one on one setting. The interviewees are six people working as recruiters for their respective companies. The result of the study shows that the recruitment agents usage of social media can in part be explained by the sensemaking process.Furthermore Foucaults theory on panopticon in society is amplified with the increasing implementation of social media in society, therefore questions arouse among the researchers regarding the ethics and moral of using social media as a recruitment tool. These questions, even when asked have not however been reflected upon by the participating recruiters. From this lack of reflection regarding ethics and moral of the usage of social media, the researchers of this study is looking for new studies to be conducted with regards to jobseekers perspective and what jobseekers can do to counteract the usage of social media among recruitment agents. The study concludes that further research is required and mainly on how individuals are effected by virtual panopticon where individuals are both acting as watchers and being watched.
