Abstract [en]

In  this  Bachelor  thesis  the  writer  aims  to  do  a  comparative  analysis  between  Swedish  and Danish textbooks. The analysis examines textbooks in the civics field, and how these textbooks in represent the area of equality between men and women. The two countries in this essay are in many ways similar to each other but in  the area of equality the two differ. The politics in Sweden has more structural focused program while Denmark are more individual focused. The purpose of this essay is to see how the presentation of equality in the civics textbooks looks. To examine this area rigorously the essay does a qualitative and quantitative analysis with three different part studies. The quantitative method includes studies of both images and words that are  connected  to  equality.  The  second  part  compares  the  two  countries  politics  and  school guidance in the area of equality. The last part of the analysis is the main one, where the text in is studied and analysed  with a qualitative method.  The essay takes  a standpoint in feminist theory such as Yvonne Hirdman, Sandra Harding and Carol Lee Bacchi. The conclusion in this bachelor thesis reveals that there are a big difference between the textbooks from Sweden and Denmark. The Danish textbooks has a more individualistic approach and has the opinion that equality  is  already  reached  in  the  Danish  society.  While  the  swedish  has  the  opinion  that equality hasn´t been reached yet and it´s quite clear in the analsysis that the Swedish textbooks are  influenced  by it.  The  structural  expectations  are  not  seen  as  problematic  in  the  Danish textbooks, and traditional gender roles are symbolised. The symbolic gender is most prominent in the Danish textbooks, and the Swedish textbooks has a more problematic view on equality. This Bachelor thesis show that, when it comes to equality, the representation in the Swedish and Danish textbooks are totally different.
