Abstract [en]

Social media is quickly expanding and has become a major part of people’s everyday life. Instagram has become a popular arena for active movements to push their campaigns through and spread their messages. Present study aims to show to what extent the feminist movement Free the nipple, through nine images, express feminism on Instagram. Free the nipple aims to highlight inequalities between men and women as well as change existing social structures. The study is examined through a multimodal analysis to show how meaning is created when image, text and context interact. The study is based on three theoretical starting points, gender, feminism and media, and male gaze. Free the nipple attempts to desexualize the female nipple by drawing parallels to what is accepted while the female nipple is tabooed. The result shows that the messages are contradictory. They express both patriarchal and pornographic discourses as well as feminist discourses.
