Abstract [en]

This qualitative study intends to identify how six Swedish small- and medium-sized enterprises (SME) communicate corporate social responsibility (CSR). Through semi- structured interviews with six managers from Swedish textile companies the study seeks to investigate what conditions SMEs face when communicating CSR, how they communicate in a trustworthy way and avoid the problematic issues with CSR-communication and further through which strategies they communicate CSR. The results show that the limited resources that are common in SMEs affect how they communicate CSR. Further, to avoid criticism and mistrust, it is crucial for companies to be transparent. It is emphasized as important to only communicate the CSR-activities that are firmly established in the company, and to avoid communicating the activities the company intends to achieve. The study also shows that endorsed communication by third-parties and low profile communication are prominent CSR- strategies within Swedish SMEs.
