School is an important part of most individuals life, that helps form their perception of the world. Sweden is often regarded highly in terms of gender equality and often heralded as source of inspiration in other countries. In spite of this, there are still gender issues within the Swedish schools that limit girls and women. The aim of this study is to study how female students experience higher education. This essay centres around questions about how they experience studying in a male dominated field, which strategies they use to cope with male dominance and how they view gender equality within their current education. Previous research has pointed out a difference in the behaviour regarding boys and girls in early education, a difference that gives boys a privileged position. This study, which is based on five qualitative interviews with females within higher Swedish educations, shows that some of the women thinks that male classmates, and male teachers, had a negative impact on their studies. The study also shows a significant absence of female teacher, something that the majority of the women found problematic.
