Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine how the perception of incapacitation and rehabilitation differs in regard to their crimeprevention effects. The purpose was furthermore to examine to what extent these perceptions differ in the male population and in the female population, and how these perceptions differ between the two genders. The sample consisted of 151 respondents, of which 77 were men and 73 were women (M=24,83 years, SD=5,69). The respondents were presented to a number of case descriptions and related statements in a web questionnaire, and the results showed higher support for the rehabilitation perspective than incapacitation regarding the perception of their crime prevention effects. Though, this difference could have been a resault of the fact that women were more positive to the rehabilitation perspective than incapacitation for a crime prevention purpose. Thus, in the male population there was no difference in the perception of the crime prevention effect of rehabilitation compared to incapacitation. Neither could any significant differences be found between the genders in their perceptions. The results of the study can be explained by the “Moral development theory”, and its aspect of women being more empathic and care taking and therefore have a positive perception of rehabilitation and its crime prevention effect. Based on the results of the study and how they differ from earlier research, the public’s influence on criminal policy is problematised.
