Mathematically talented students : An empirical study of how Swedish teachers draw attention to mathematical talent in elementary school (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The study is a quantitative and qualitative questionnaire that examines whether and how teachers draw attention to and handle the phenomenon of mathematical talent. The questions that the study examines include how teachers perceived mathematical talent and how they acquire knowledge of the phenomenon. The study was based on two separate questionnaires that were distributed to primary school teachers in three different counties in Sweden. The second questionnaire was sent to a selection of teachers from the first questionnaire. The study showed that the teachers who participated in the study experience that they are more interested, competent and active in paying attention to mathematical talent than their colleges. The majority of teachers who participated in the study meant that the lack of interest and knowledge of the teachers 'colleges was due to the fact that the teachers' colleges prioritized other student groups with difficulties in meeting the knowledge requirements. The teachers who had an interest in mathematical talent took responsibility for acquiring knowledge about the subject to identify pupils in the ordinary educational work with support from the school's support materials.
