Abstract [en]

Using critical discourse analysis we have examined whether Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrik Larsson is portrayed as ”swedish” or as ”the other”. We have also examined whether the portrayal of these players differ between three different newspapers and if the portrayal differ between the two football players. Theories applied in the study concern sport and media, ethnicity, swedishness, the Swedish sport model, and what by definition is to be “Swedish” or “the other”/”the immigrant”. In the study we have analyzed twelve articles. Two articles about each player in Nerikes Allehanda Dagens Nyheter and Aftonbladet (Sportbladet). These articles were published between June 10 and June 25 2006. In the analysis we found that both players are portrayed as “swedish” and as “the other” and that they are equally portrayed as “swedish” and as “the other” in our working material. The ways in which they are portrayed as “the other” differ however. Henrik Larsson is mainly portrayed as “the other” by being represented as dishonest, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic is portrayed as “the other” mainly by being represented as individualistic. The portrayal of the players as “swedish” do not differ as much their portrayal as “the other”. Both players are represented as humble and as loyal towards the team. There is a difference between the newspapers regarding the portrayal of the players as “swedish” or as “the other”. Dagens Nyheter have a tendency to portray the players as “the other”, this because it portray the players as “the other” in three out of four articles. Aftonbladet (Sportbladet) have a tendency to portray the players as “swedish”, this because it portray the players as “swedish” in three out of four articles. Nerikes Allehanda portrays the players as “swedish” in two out of four articles and as “the other” in the remaining two articles.
