Abstract

The purpose of this study was trying to understand the situation for relatives to persons with psychical function disabilities. The understanding and description of the matter derives from how the relatives themselves tell their part during the interviews.

Interviews were made with four respondents and qualitative method was used for the study. The interviews were made with a semi-structured interview guide which made it possible for a succession of questions during the interviews. The results were accounted on three different spheres; the relative’s experience of importance in its relation to the person in the family who is psychically disabled, the relative’s apprehension regarding the informal support as well as the relative’s formal support. In the first-mentioned sphere the result proved among other things that the respondents in every case felt anxiety and stress for its relative with a psychical function disability. In the second sphere the results showed that the respondents in every case experienced that the informal support to themselves as well as their disabled relative is of major importance in order to have the strength to give the support and security that is required in the process of treatment. This was stated, despite that the relatives in the study experienced that the informal support to themselves as well the person with a psychical functional disability gradually disappeared during time. The result of the third sphere showed that the relatives wished to be more involved in the process of treatment of its member of the family, something which was rarely accommodated.
