Abstract [en]

This essay looks into how the dependent relation between the American film industry, Hollywood and the United States department of defence, the Pentagon, manifests in the final picture. With literature studies the essay clarifies how the cooperation between these institutions begins in the 1920’s and then develops and grows strong till the present day. With semiotic and rhetoric methods a significant analysis is carried out on a selection of contemporary American war films; Black Hawk Down (2001), Tears of the Sun (2003) and We Were Soldiers (2002), to explain how the cooperation manifests in the final picture. Jean-Michel Valantin’s theories on the American myths, the frontier, the city upon the hill and manifest destiny which according to him still has a great influence on the collective American consciousness, appeared very useful for the analysis. The theoretical chapter also includes the definition of propaganda as a concept and also a model which describes how to detect propaganda on the basis of the various techniques used by the propagandist. The result of the analysis shows that the occurrence of propaganda still plays a major part of the movies, in particularly national security cinemas which war films are a part of. The results also states that the propaganda appears in a slightly more sophisticated and subtle form compared to the early 1920’s, yet it is still rather explicit for the attentive eye to detect. The last chapter of the essay contains a discussion were the conclusions are presented and compared with the theories and other useful aspects.
