Magnet brake in lift winch (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Ski resorts have a problem that their lift winches need regular service of the brakes, ie. the brakes on the individual T-bars. This means that ski lift operators have to shut down their facilities and bring in service personnel, which costs resources. By replacing the current brake system with magnetic brakes, the need for service would decrease.

The new magnetic brakes must be designed to have different braking action when extending the lift winch line, compared to when it is retracted, and must also be able to fit into the existing lift winch housing. The problem herein solved, was defined as a product development assignment.

Several ideas were generated by an idea generating process and a selection process was conducted to develop a final concept that meets all design criteria and significantly extends the service intervals.

The design process carried out included that a number of tests were carried out and principle calculations were made on parts of the structure. The final concept is a magnetic brake that requires minimal service and also solves the problem of different braking performance depending on whether the lift line is extended or retracted. Further work includes developing a process for adapting the current lift winches too accept mounting the magnetic brake. Further work also include additional detailed development of the magnetic brake components.
