Abstract [en]

Abstract

My aim with this essay is to examine the portrayal of “searching after an identity” in the book Skuggan över Stenbäcken (1982) by Maria Gripe. I have chosen to focus on how the search for an identity is related to gender issues.

I want to enlighten the continuing growth of the main character and her knowledge of the social, cultural and political understandings which construct gender and which are tightly related to a personal growth and development as well as liberation.

My purpose with writing this essay is to examine a number of questions and how they relate to gender and identity. By examining how the writer describes the search of the characters after their identities I would like to show the different conditions, which exist for men or masculinity and for women and femininity as cultural constructions. Furthermore, I will use Judith Butler’s theory of performative gender and her notion of sex as something derived from cultural manifestations in order to understand the character of the novel, i.e. Carolin.
