Abstract [en]

The purpose of this qualitative study, with a descriptive character, is to describe the Swedish correctional officers´ staff culture from an interactional perspective based on emotions, strategies, and norms, and to enlighten differences in gender. The result will be achieved from interviews with ten correctional officers from various departments at different correctional institutes for men. The introduction of the article points out societys´ perspective and lack of interest in the correctional officers´ working role and which impact this has on the staff culture, and thereby on the Correctional Prison and Probation Service as a whole. The theoretical orientation consist theories about social representation, symbolic interactionism, and a dramaturgical view of roles, combined with international and national research. National research of the topic mainly focuses on the life of the interns. Academically, there is a general lack of interest in how the correctional officers perceive and are affected by their environment at work. This article describes a staff culture where the old tradition, which is totally control oriented, still partly remains. Due to deficient instructions at work, in a top controlled bureaucratic organization, different types of cultures have formed among correctional officers. The old staff members feel a great responsibility for the safety of the organization and sometimes look upon younger staff members, who in general are more treatment oriented, with mistrust. Social support, within the organization, can the correctional officer only get from his/her own work group. The need of a positive work group climate, affects how the staff members deals with both their own feelings, as well as those of colleagues and interns. Lack of knowledge and proper education makes each correctional officer to develop his/her own strategy for handling emotions. Male correctional officers are generally more interested in working with security issues, while female correctional officers mainly prefer working with social and investigational issues. New employees experience incomparable messages from the organization and the work group, which leads to them assimilating to the existing norm. The fact that the organization is deficient in communication does not encourage a development towards the proclaimed vision.
