Title: Contact persons working in county council – and municipality care evaluations of needs and quality of life as well as prerequisites to answer to those needs of persons suffering from psychosis.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the study was to examine how contact persons working in county council care (CC) and contact persons in municipality care (MC) in Örebro county identify the needs of persons suffering from psychosis and evaluate their quality of life. Other aspects included were if, and how, prerequisites in promoting needs and quality of life were described for the group of patients. The questions at issue focused on types of needs identified by CC and MC and aspects of importance in promoting the needs identified.

Focus groups were used as a forum for qualitative interviewing when gathering data. Two separate focus groups were carried out with CC and MC respectively.

Housing, support and social relations were called to attention by MC as needs of importance for the group of patients. The CC discussed economy, medicine/health/treatment, hygiene, support, housing and social relations. Both MC and CC pointed out staff-patient relations and the personnel’s approach as central issues when meeting the needs earlier identified.

The outcome of the study is discussed in relation to the guidelines for the reform of psychiatry and municipality and county council services in the area of psychosis care. Furthermore, the concepts of quality of life, need, social network, staff-patient relation and the cooperation between county councils and municipalities.

Several areas of need identified as lacking seem to contribute to the social isolation considered by CC and MC as main problems for this group of patients. There also seems to be a fine line in the patient-staff relation between being personal, which promotes recovery, and a too tight relationship which may make the patients condition chronic. Differing commissions and cultures between municipality and county council services seem to cause different ways of looking at the patients. The CC seem to look at the individuals in terms of illness and care, whereas the MC look to the healthy aspects of the individual. Furthermore, there seems to be problems in their cooperation due to lack in communication, which might affect the patient negatively.
