Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The middle managers position is not often explored and when it is the position is described as a problematic topic. On the basis of ten qualitative interviews with middle managers within private and public sector the purpose of this paper was to establish how stressful they think their work situation is. A reason for the middle managers work related stress is an unbalance between demands and resources. The subjects did all feel stress in their work, but most of the time this was of a positive kind. The interviews also showed that the middle manager role cause stress when responsibility exceeded power. Another stressful situation shown was when the demands from both the directors and the subordinates put the middle manager in a difficult situation in the organization. A conclusion drawn from the interviews is that the middle managers role isn’t as problematic as it is described.
