Abstract

Bachelor essey in political science by Merima Kozlicic, spring 2006

Title: “Swedish politics of economic stabilization. A study of swedish politics of stabilization with focus on the creditmarket”

The purpose of this essey is to describe the swedish politics of stabilization with focus on the creditmarket and its function within the regulations that were present until 1985 but also to describe how deregulations of the creditmarket have influenced on transformation of the politics of economic stabilization during the first half of 1990s. The questions this essey seeks to answer are: 1. a) Which were the basic objectives and means within the politics of economic stabilization until releasing of the economic crisis in the beginning of the 1990s? b) Which are the basic objectives and means within the new politics of economic stabilization in the middle of the 1990s? 2. a) What were the functions of the creditmarket within the politics of economic stabilization until 1985? b) What are the functions of the creditmarket after the process of deregulation?

The method adopted in this essey is a theoretical structured description. This means that I am going to do a theoretical description of how politics of economic stabilization has developed in a historical perspective but also a description of how creditmarket has been employed as instrument in political objectives. At the same time, this theoretical descriptive study aims to illustrate the politics of economic stabilization, with its basic objectives and means, after deregulations of the creditmarket and during the period of the economic crisis in the 1990s. The theoretical description is based on three concepts; “the politics of stabilization”, “creditmarket” and “interest”.

My conclusion concerning the politics of economic stabilization is that it has undergone huge transformation after the deregulation of the creditmarket and the economic crisis in the 1990s. The most profound changes are the institutional ones. The Bank of Sweden is today much more independent prior to the old politics of economic stabilization and has as its main objective to maintain a low rate of inflation. The swedish politics of economic stabilization is nowdays relating its public costs to the recommendations from the European agreement of economic stabilization. The conclusion regarding the creditmarket after the process of deregulation is that it has undergone a rapid process of adapting to the free market strategy and integreting into the international financial markets.
