Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine what view youths that often visit youth centers have of sexual harassments, regarding: (i) in what extent they experience sexual harassments as a problem, (ii) what they regard as solutions of the possible problem and also (iii) what they believe are the reasons for sexual harassments. A critical question is if it is possible to distinguish some gender based patterns in the youth’s ideas. The analysis is made by using feminist theory, mainly the concept gender system. A discourse analysis point of view is the basis because of the assumption that the way youths talk about sexual harassments effects the construction of the social world. The used method is qualitative with an explorative perspective. Four focus groups, two with girls and two with boys, with totally seventeen youths constitutes the base for the study. The result shows that sexual harassments very often occur among these youths and that they think this is a problem. The meaning of words of abuse such as “whore” is of big interest in all focus groups and the main substance is that the meaning of these words is not static, but depends on the context, by which it is said and for who it is intended for. When it comes to solutions the youths recommend more severe punishments and more interventions from adults. Especially the girl groups mean that girls need opportunities to strengthen their self confidence so they better can protest when they are being abused. The youth’s explanations of sexual harassment consider boy’s sexual desire, the influence of groups, the power of boys and girl’s self confidence. The majority of the informers consider that sexual harassments are performed by a special group of boys, preferably popular boys with strong self confidence. Three of the four focus groups think that sexual harassments are more occurring among youths with other ethnic extraction than among ethnic Swedes. No significant gender based differences can be found. The two girl groups show similarities whereas the boys do not in any greater extent. In the analysis the concept gender system is applied on the results and it is clear that this concept can be useful in the understanding of the youth’s view of sexual harassments. However the gender order can not explain everything, for example why not all boys are considered as possible perpetrators. Further the risk of focusing on changing the girls and their role in the harassments are discussed, while this can put the blame on them and strengthen existing gender systems. Finally studies that examine what distinguish boys that commit these actions and an approach that in greater extent considers boys as a heterogeneous group, possible to change, is asked for.
