Educational issues in relation to regional development: a  bi-polar perspective

Abstract [en]

Education is largely acknowledged as a key to regional development. This article discusses the issue from a bipolar perspective in which shortcomings, both in the south and the north, are initially presented as a contextualizing frame for further discussion. The beginning of changes in the policy of aid agencies from aid to partnership is also highlighted. The creation of centers of excellence in various research fields is presented as an important way to foster research and development in the south and as viable alternative to reach partnership dialogue between north and south. Models of inquiry in connection with creation, diffusion and utilization of knowledge are presented with emphasis in their necessary linkage. The article also analyses three of the main trends in educational research, which have considerable implications for regional development, particular emphasis is made in the role of participatory research.
