Worldwide sloyd: curriculum development in sloyd and technology education as an expression of social demands : a comparative study
Örebro University, Department of Education.
2000 (English)Report (Other academic)
Abstract [en]

Different researches have described educational development, in particular curriculum design, as a socioeconomic, culturally and politically conditioned phenomenon. The development of sloyd and technology education proves this regular feature. Historically, the curriculum of the subjects has been closely related to the changes in the demands of society, specifically those of working life. The research work presented in this report tries to uncover the main features of this relationship having as a case study the development of the subjects in a representative group of countries of the European Union and Japan. The present study is part of the Nordic project Worldwide Sloyd -an ideology for future society-, a larger inquiry organized by NordFo (Nordic Forum for research and development in Craft and design) aimed at defining possible contributions of the experiences of sloyd in Scandinavia to international education in this field. In this report the main features of the research project and its theoretical grounds are described. A review of issues regarding curriculum development aimed at providing the reader with a glimpse of the complexity of research within this field is also presented. Major changes in society in the so call postmodern period are scrutinized in search for a methodological definition to apply in the further stages of the study.
