History of Swedish educational sloyd: a subject for mourners?
Örebro University, Department of Education.
2003 (English)Conference paper, Oral presentation only (Refereed)
Abstract [en]

History of education has acknowledges for more than a century the remarkable impact of Swedish sloyd in educational systems world-wide; fewer Swedish educational phenomena have had the international attention that sloyd once had. To its merits sloyd had in its early development what could be considered in current terms one the most efficient systems of disseminating results ever seen in the educational arena. The study of the particular features of the development of Swedish sloyd has attracted scholars from different contexts internationally. Despite this list of merits the Swedish sloyd of today still lacks acknowledgement among Swedish academic community.

Latest research works in this field has contributed to uncover different dimensions of what has to an extent remained as “black box” in the educational discourse (sloyd as an educational and socio-psychological phenomenon). Researches with historiographic basis have indeed call attention upon a subject that for some remains a sort of “educational archaeology” and to others a remarkable educational phenomenon worth to be scrutinised on the light of current educational and sociological epistemologies. This paper is large in questions but short in answers; it essentially approaches the crisis in research on sloyd aiming to contribute to discussing the need for researching the history of sloyd beyond the frames of historiography and the relevance to move beyond what the author considers and impasse in the academic development of the subject
