Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Parents can influence children's Internet use and vulnerability online through Internet-specificmediation strategies, but there is no research on individual differences in parenting regardingthis. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to investigate subgroups of parents basedon individual differences in Internet-specific mediation as well as what factors might explainthe differences. The study was based on data from an international research project conductedin 2014 in which parents of children aged 11-18 (N = 1116) had answered an online survey.Only parents with biological or adopted children were included in this study (n = 1025). Acluster analysis resulted in three subgroups of parents. The Mediation group mediated mostand used a high degree of all mediation strategies. The Active mediation group mediated to alesser extent and mainly chose Active mediation as a mediation strategy. The Middle groupmediated at a level that was between the other groups. The groups also differed in terms ofchildren's age, parental authority, concern and Internet-specific self-efficacy, which couldexplain the differences in mediation. In the Mediation group the youngest children wereincluded, as well as the highest authority, concern, and Internet-specific self-efficacy. In theActive mediation group the oldest children were included, among with the lowest authorityand concern. Internet-specific self-efficacy was equally high in the Middle group and theActive mediation group, despite that the level of mediation varied between these groups. Theresults indicated that individual differences exist and that the factors linked to thesedifferences should also be taken into account in future research.
