Abstract [sv]

The overall purpose of this study is to find out how primary school teachers experience the democratic mission. The research questions posed focused on how primary school teachers understand the democratic mission, their opinions about the preconditions for the work with the democratic mission and the practical work with it. This is a qualitative study where semi-structured interviews were used as source material. We interviewed 7 primary school teachers. We have concluded that the educational mission in the creation of a future democratic citizen is perceived as important by the teachers. Based on the teachers' experiences, the results show that the functions of the education are qualifying and socializing. Our result show that teachers feel that the knowledge mission is held higher than the mission in working with values and norms. While society relies on teachers' competencies, they do not provide them with enough resources for how to work with the democratic assignment. Teachers want to give students influence over how to work in the classroom and are responsive to their ideas and thoughts and want to build on them.
