Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to show what ideas of education is discussed in the contemporary media debate. The study examines which ideals of teaching that are discussed in the Swedish newspapers "Dagens Nyheter", "Svenska Dagbladet" and "Aftonbladet". These teaching ideals are studied through an idea and ideological analytic method. Through a broad theoretical discussion an analysis framework is constructed which consists of different theoretical ideals of teaching. In the analysis these theoretical ideals forms the basis for comparison with the ideals in the media debate.

The main result shows that the media debate is dominated by three ideals of teaching, these are also similar with the theoretical ideals of teaching. These ideals of teaching are the knowledge-, value- and the individual ideal. The ideal of knowledge means that the main purpose of education is to mediate knowledge. Instead of mediate knowledge the aim for the ideal of value is that the purpose of education should be to teach different values. The individual ideal points out that teaching should be adapted to the individuals and emphasizes active working processes for the pupils. Other ideals of teaching also appears in the media debate, but not as frequent.
