Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to shed the light on the challenges that face English teachers in teaching English as a second language to newly arrived refugee students. The teachers interviewed in this study expressed concern about the level of the students’ English and the difficultly the faced adapting teaching to students’ needs. This research focuses on the strategies and methods used by the concerned English language teachers in order to support students’ learning experience. Furthermore, this research shows how the approach used by teachers is based on the students’ individual needs and their personal circumstances. The research discusses the challenges faced by English language teachers in teaching students who have newly arrived to Sweden. The main content of the discussion is based on multiple interviews with English language teachers. Furthermore, the research studies the teaching methods and strategies which teachers use to effectively teach the students. The research method used in this study is a mix of class visits and interviews with five English language teachers. The main challenges facing teachers were the short time frames and lack of resources. In some situations, teachers coped with the additional pressure of accepting new students under such circumstances. The lack of proper planning to manage the new coming students meant that teachers had not received the required resources. They emphasised the importance of such support especially when students have shown a great degree of interest to learn and progress. Most of the teachers stressed their concerns about the issues with time and resources allocated
