Abstract [en]

That the dialects are gradually fading out is today a fact. There are many reasons why, but the fact that we are travelling more is of significant role together with the fast technical developments. For example: when TV and radio became normal property of a household, and people in Sweden were expected to change their language to a more standardized vocabulary and pronunciation. This study examines the individual attitudes towards their inherited dialect as well as how and when the dialect is being used in the small community of Norsjö, Västerbotten. The dialect is very distinctive from standard Swedish and therefore hard for any outsider to understand when spoken. The study was conducted through a phenomenographic research method and included 4 interviewees with the requested origin, but from different generations. The results differed to some extent, but what the interviewees showed to have in common was that they all, in a variated degree, were proud of their linguistic heritage and that the dialect is normally spoken by the oldest generation. The spoken dialect is also normally only used when speaking to the older generation, not the younger generation. Therefore the young people of the community of Norsjö today does not inherit the linguistic abilities that their ancestors possesses.
