Parasocial relationships: Precisely what you need them to be (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The use of parasocial relationships (i.e. one-sided relationships with media personalities) is relatively unexplored using a qualitative research method but has previously been shown to have important implications on people’s way of life. This study aims to explore the experience of the parasocial relationships young adults have by exploring how they relate to YouTube-celebrities. Data was collected through the use of ten semi structured interviews and was analysed with the use of an inductive thematic analysis. The analysis resulted in the core category “spot-on relationship” and has three main themes: “meaningfulness”, “intimacy”, and “identification” which represent the qualitative aspects of the phenomena, and act together to moderate the strength and specific function of the parasocial relationship to the YouTube celebrities. The results indicate that the parasocial relationships that the participants engage in serve precisely the purpose that needs to be filled for that specific participant. The relationships can be described as spot-on relationships where similarities to the qualities of interpersonal relationships, and internalized processes, explain why the parasocial relationship feels real.
