With an increasing number of prisoners handled by Swedish correctional facilities, previous research on overcrowding has shown connection to detrimental changes in the work environment. These changes have ultimately shown to be correlated with a higher presence of work-related stress among correctional officers. This study aims to explore work-related experiences in the context of overcrowding in Swedish prisons by the use of qualitative interviews and by applying the job-demand control, support-model to explain how prison staff experience their feelings of everyday work. Through the use of purposive sampling, five participants were separately interviewed and asked about their experiences of changes in their work environment in relation to overcrowding. The interviews were conducted with support of an interview guide with open ended questions based on theory and previous research. The findings imply that overcrowding in Swedish prisons have an impact on correctional officers’ feelings of increasing demands and synchronically lower control, which may contribute to work-related stress. The results also stress the importance of support from management and work colleagues in the correctional officers’ ability to better cope with these stressors. The findings, together with possible implications, are discussed in the concluding section of this paper. 

Med ett ökande antal klienter inom Kriminalvården, har tidigare forskning kopplats samman överbeläggning med negativa förändringar i arbetsmiljön. Förändringar som i längden visat på samband med en högre nivå av arbetsrelaterad stress. Föreliggande studien syftar till att utforska arbetsförhållanden i kontexten av överbeläggning i svenska anstalter med användandet av kvalitativa intervjuer och genom att tillämpa job-demand-support-modellen för att förklara kriminalvårdares upplevelser i det vardagliga arbetet. Genom ett ändamålsenligt urval, intervjuades fem kriminalvårdare om deras upplevelser om förändringar i deras arbetsmiljö i relation till överbeläggning. Intervjuerna genomfördes med stöd av en intervjuguide baserad på teori och tidigare forskning. Resultaten visade att överbeläggning i svenska anstalter har en effekt på kriminalvårdares upplevelser av ökade krav och samtidigt minskad kontroll, faktorer som kan bidra till en högre arbetsrelaterad stress. Resultaten visar även vikten av stöd från ledning och kollegor för att bättre hantera dessa stressorer. Resultaten, tillsammans med möjliga implikationer, diskuteras i den avslutande delen av uppsatsen.
