Abstract [en]

Drawing on the concept of school foodscape, the aim of this study is to examine pupils' perceptions and experiences of vegetarian school food in order to gain a deeper understanding of children's food choices and how it can change. Twenty-three semi-structured group interviews with 76 pupils in three schools have been analysed. The results show that the pupils' main reasons for choosing or rejecting vegetarian food differed from those of adults. Resistance towards vegetarian school food was not based on prejudices against vegetarianism, but on various taste and recognition factors. Instead of health and environmental reasons, the pupils highlighted different animal ethical reasons. The students' perceptions reflected their families’ norms and values of food and eating, rather than their gender. Finally, pedagogical implications of the results are discussed.

Abstract [sv]

Med utgångspunkt i skolan som matlandskap syftar denna studie till att undersöka elevers uppfattningar om och upplevelser av den vegetariska skolmaten för att få en djupare förståelse för barns matval och hur det kan förändras. Tjugotre semi-strukturerade gruppintervjuer med 76 elever i tre skolor har analyserats. Resultatet visar att elevernas huvudsakliga skäl till att välja eller välja bort vegetarisk mat skiljde sig från vuxnas. Motståndet mot vegetarisk skolmat baserades inte på fördomar mot vegetarism, utan olika smak- och igenkänningsfaktorer. Istället för hälsomässiga och miljömässiga anledningar, så lyfte eleverna fram olika djuretiska skäl till att äta vegetarisk kost. Elevernas uppfattningar speglade hemmets normer och värderingar kring mat och ätande, snarare än deras kön. Slutligen diskuteras pedagogiska implikationer av resultatet.
