Violence and patriarchy
2022 (English)In: Encyclopedia of Violence, Peace, and Conflict / [ed] Lester Kurtz, Cambridge, MA: Academic Press, 2022, 3rdChapter in book (Refereed)
Abstract [en]
This chapter considers some key aspects of patriarchy and violence and the relationship between patriarchy and violence. It notes that the concept of patriarchy is necessary to understand violence. It encourages the reader to think broadly in terms of the meanings and mechanisms of violence, and in terms of its locations, as well as the links between mechanisms and locations.
The aim is to discuss forms and frameworks of violence, and violence in relation to patriarchy. A sub-aim is to theorize violence, understood as gendered and intersectional, and as an inequality in its own right. The concept of a violence regime is suggested to make visible the violent commonalities and complex covariations across the different pillars of violence.
