Kunskapsluckor i matematik, stadieövergången högstadiet till gymnasiet
Örebro University, School of Science and Technology.
2022 (Swedish)Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Students at university preparatory programs need to pass mathematics 1b to get a high school diploma. Students show difficulties and tend to drop a grade level, which becomes problematic for students who reach the grade E.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore and map out what from a student perspective what factors contribute to the grade-deterioration between the lower secondary school and upper secondary school.

Method: Semi-structured interviews have been conducted and analyzed from a hermeneutic perspective and a phenomenographic approach.

Findings: Several factors play a role in students' view and attitude towards mathematics. Low-achieving students tend to have a negative view and attitude towards mathematics.

Conclusion: The main factor to students' negative view and attitude towards mathematics is the lack of prior knowledge
