Abstract [en]

Involuntary celibacy, abbreviated to incel, is an internet phenomena. The study aims to answer questions regarding how incels create distinctions both between themselves and others but also among themselves through their use of symbols. This study concerns the use of symbols in online-forums designated for the incel community by using the theoretical framework of Durkheim (2001), Douglas (1966) and Collins (2004). The study uses a method of qualitative summative content analysis in order to find keywords that take a symbolic function. The holy and the profane used by Durkheim (2001) in his observations of aboriginal people in Australia, the pure and the unclean in Douglas (1966) study of dirt, and the interactionism that creates symbols (Collins, 2004) are interpreted on the anonymous online-forums that incels use as a means of communication. This leads to certain classifications regarding blackpill and bluepill as symbols but also of the delicate use of sex, violence and the body as different bearers of symbolic meaning.
